Ziggy 11,676
Wrote this in the pitchfork review thread but to contribute here also… My biggest thing is I wish the physical sound felt more physical. Like man of the year and hammer kinda have that but a lot of the album’s mix doesn’t feel particularly punchy or crisp or stark. Not particularly anything. Great sound choices for what ultimately doesn’t get to REALLY shine bc they’re made to feel a bit too palatable and equal in the mix. I feel like for this album she needed to go there as she did with a lot of melodrama where the sounds you could often FEEL like homemade dynamite’s second half. So it’s good but feels a bit palatable in that it approached being the ugly rawness but shied away last second. I’ll definitely blame the producers on that one bc sure she has a voice and genuinely collabs, but I think she really relies on their expertise on these matters and they should have been just a hair bolder. Man of the Year is a great example of heading that way where I felt I needed just a hair more of that starkness from things after Edited June 28 by Ziggy

All songs sound like demos. 1

She compared the album to a construction site with nothing but scafolding and unfinished walls. Same reason the songs don't ever drop or release either. It's built on raw edges and tension.
holy scheisse 22,183
Loved it it also inspired me to revisit melodrama and I found myself crying tears transported back to the time in my life when it came out - so many vivid memories associated with streaming that album in the bsckground the same can be said for pure heroine and solar power for me too. Cant wait to keep digesting this album and see what sort of memories I end up associating it with. standouts for me are David, favorite daughter, grwm, current affairs

Battle 4 Ur Life 6,698
Obsessed. My fave is Man of The Year, What Was That and Shapeshifter but all tracks are interesting. “Fantastic, chic, freak, slay.”
Anderson123 38,105
Albums with 10-11-12 tracks and this length are so satisfying to listen to when they’re interesting pieces of work. I don’t think I like a single song from Virgin more than Ribs, Team or Buzzcut Season but it’s probably a good listening experience from start to finish. Melodrama is definitely my number 1 and one of my favorite albums ever but Virgin could take #2 with time over Pure Heroine. Time will tell!
StrawberryBlond 14,787
It's alright, but I much preferred Melodrama and Solar Power. This album is just a bit too sparse with the production never really coming to the fore. Shapeshifter was the best and she picked good singles but the rest of it seems like filler by comparison. I appreciate the raw honesty she has on it, but even then, I still feel like there's something missing. Current Affairs lost me on who she was talking about with the honeymoon video and what the ominous thing that was "pure and true til the tape came out" and when I can't make sense on parts of a song like that because they're too vague and personal, it takes me out of it. And Clearblue could easily have been longer and I didn't know whether to treat it as a song or interlude. It's just a shame that it started out so good and then descended a bit with no major standouts, especially considering how long of a wait there is between albums. It's not bad but there's no way this should have the same score as Mayhem.
