Thankfully it's still layered and nuanced. her expression represents either boredom, fear or distrust, the men turning away from her (or is it her turning away from them?) none of them clearly visible, all wearing black, but she's in a white dress. very symbolic and i stan. (also - is that tom holland?)

I still like the other cover more, I thought it was clever and successful at what it intended to do, but I understand why they made a more kid-friendly one.

Even in this alternate cover, she’s slightly bent over and her mouth signals discomfort and submissiveness. You can see her eyes asking for help which is utterly offensive to womanhood. She’s really here to move back the feminist movement 50 years ago.

And here comes the non-offensive variant, just as I predicted, though took longer than I thought. Probably were all shot at the same time but deliberately held back until now. This one becomes more beautiful the more I look at it. Very glamorous and with an almost tragic edge. A sense of the men being disengaged but Sabrina being willing to please but ultimately underappreciated. Should've been the main cover. She didn't need to suggest that all detractors of the original were puritans though. Just accept that some people were uncomfortable with it as they had every right to be.

It's nice to see we agree now on the cover and I like your take on it as well. This one tells a story and has more clear intent.

I agree, it's clearer but I also like that it's still ambiguous and open to interpretation: are the men looking away from her or is she running away from them? What are they/she looking at? Who are these men? Why is she holding the one on the left, not any of the other ones instead, is he special somehow or was that a random choice? Just a few surface level questions that emerge, and I love covers that warrant this type of response.

It kind of reminds me born this way in a weird way: did we ever find out why Gaga was a motorcycle? :ladyhaha: another album cover that isn't necessarily obvious from the start.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, very obvious album covers would include pretty much almost anything in Mariah Carey's discography, Katy Perry's teenage dream (still a gorgeous cover though, but it doesn't really raise any questions), and there are likely a lot of other examples of covers that don't really challenge the viewer at all.

I might be reaching, but if she always intended to release the og cover art followed by this alt as a mean to show how we as a society ultimately love to see a woman controlled - is genius in such a metacontextual way and the promo cycle would be all about that narrative. So smart. Anyway a boring alternative cover to a boring existing cover art.:interestinga:
