Benson Boone Can’t Land the Backflip

Despite the Freddie Mercury-­referencing deep-V jumpsuits he’s wearing these days, his latest deflates under the weight of all its glam-pop and Seventies and Eighties pastiche. At times swaggerless and too pristine in his attempts to corner the market of retro-pop stardom, Boone loses the youthful edge of his debut and the rawness that made his biggest hit soar so high. On American Heart, songs like “Man in Me” and “Mystical Magical” are the worst offenders of his retromania, the latter too cloying and unconvincing in its whimsy.

I'm sensing a lot of the hate comes from attitudes about white men.  Which is for the most part, fair enough.

I set this to a part of the video I think most people would like.  It's a great vocal and solid track.  Maybe safe, but when did safe become a bad thing?  It's fun.

I do quite like him too. He's not the second coming of Christ by any means, and that Moonbeam Ice Cream song is pretty irritating, but the rest of his music is fine and he's at least trying, unlike most male popstars.

I like some of his songs and I’m glad he’s at least putting in some effort unlike 90% of male singers, plus he’s actually talented. But this whole era seems weird to me, don’t like the American aesthetic, it’s giving “I’m secretly MAGA but I can’t openly admit that cause my sales/streams will tank” lol

His music is just very ad jingle coded. It’s not bad but it’s tired and forgettable. 2 stars out of 5 may be harsh but this album doesn’t deserve anything above 3. Benson is clearly a talented singer but his music is just nothing to rave about and the album’s theme is all over the place.

he's got a great voice and Mystical Magical is a pretty good pop song, but I agree with the comment above this feels very manufactured. He just needs better music honestly
