Bonnie McKee — the songwriter behind some of the most massive hits, including California Gurls by Katy Perry, and How We Do (Party) by Rita Ora — has seen the music industry evolve since she wrote her first record at just 14, and not all of the changes have been positive. She described the royalties songwriters now receive as 'nothing' and 'insignificant.'

'On the streaming platforms, we get 0.0003 percent of a penny per stream,' Bonnie revealed, adding that 'it's not a livable wage for songwriters and that really needs to change.'
'It used to be if you were a middle class songwriter and you got a B-side on a Rihanna album, or even a smaller artist than that, you could buy a house. But these days that is not the case,' Bonnie explained.

When it came to co-writing with artists like Kesha and Katy, Bonnie called it 'a truly collaborative effort.'

As for writing with Katy on some of her most iconic songs, Bonnie admitted it was 'sometimes very difficult' because 'we have a really high standard, and we wanted to make the best pop music ever,' admitting, 'on some of them, I feel like we did.'

Kesha had a 'clear aesthetic' which made it 'very easy to write with her because she comes in with great ideas.'

that's insane so if a song gets 100,000 streams the writer makes 30 cents? (or is my math wrong)
What credit gets the most revenue now? It used to be writing I thought which is why Gaga would give writing credits to producers etc so that they could earn more than what production credits pay

This is why I stopped releasing music after 4 releases...

As an independent artist writing, producing, singing, managing social media, selling merch, and editing YouTube videos all for PENNIES was insane to me...

My annual subscription for my distributor cost more than what I was making and they kept rasing the price every year...

It was pointless and Spotify kept raising the threshold for indie artists...

streams does not equal number of people. if a song has 100,000 streams that does not mean that 100,000 people streamed the song. If we do the math, if we average 20-50 listens per person who streamed that song, that equals about 2000-5000 people who actually listened to the song. That is huge when it comes to paying out via advertising clicks, streaming costs. So it kind of makes sense.
