Skyana Rava 1,004
I feel a flavor of classic Gaga arguments about copying vs. being inspired by something. Going all the way back to BTW, the "copying Madonna" narrative felt confused. Gaga clearly pays homage to other artists all the time. I fully believe HBDUWM was Taylor Swift inspired. This isn't a bad thing, and it doesn't mean HBDUWM doesn't also reference other sounds and songs. I guess the debate around all this feels a a bit misguided to me HBDUWM is an undeniably Taylor influenced song as well as a unique and triumphant Gaga classic uniting music forms across multiple decades. Ta da! 1
GerMonsterNotta 1,372
I saw all of this as well, but I wondered is it just because the Taylor Swift hype has been just so ‘everywhere’ for the past few years that our brains now easily connect the two… On the other hand, In that section of the mayhem promo tour, I also wonder if it’s statement that Gaga sometimes wishes to embody a popstar that ‘the whole public can adore’ - to live for The Fame… she’s asking the public how bad do they want her what can she do to please them and keep the love between celebrity - fans - gp balanced, … which is something which Taylor does capture…. But then she slips back into Mayhem mode, with SOAM and BTW and shallow etc… and then realising she can try to be happy in both mental states … in finding strength in balancing BOTH light/balance/correctness/darling as well as doses of dark/messy/raw/fighter Edited Sunday at 01:47 PM by GerMonsterNotta

Taumaturg0 456
HBDUWM reminds me of Eh Eh and The Cure, it's just synth pop with more naive, less metaphoric, lyricism. It just happens that TS had some very heavy synth pop inspired releases, she does have a way of writing lyrics that is more direct, and people have short term memory

LauraPalmer 635
i do understand the TS comparisons, but i just think Gaga was thinking of 80s synthpop when she wrote it i’m a woman, i insist, it’s my life ♀ 2

The only time I got reminded of Taylor Swift is with HBDUWM tbh. That's it. zzbrandon 49
i think it's a satire song, like mayheming with pop fans about how pop music fans all hyping Taylor as music industry, but she can do it too if she want, i think that's the point, the whole mayhem album is full of reference of current pop music, like the weeknd, Taylor, Miley, so take it easy if she done it now, that's message she want to send for lms Edited Sunday at 04:16 PM by zzbrandon 2

Franch Toast 26,511
It’s not influenced by Taylor. You can see the influence of 80s synth pop, like Yazoo/Yaz’s “Only You” (1982). Taylor also has interpolated 80s synth pop. Taylor did not invent these sounds. As for the Tudum aesthetics, they bear more in common with MJ’s “Thriller Video.” Signed, someone who was alive during the 1980s and had an older sister very into synth pop who made me many mixtapes and who watched the “Thriller” video when it debuted and was terrified.
