What the heck is Chromatica?

Didn’t she explain it in the Apple interview. Chromatica is how she views the world and her healing in simpler forms. Just like how we can break down art into simpler forms like music notes and colors ala “Chromatic”. This album was representation of her observations.

Stupid love was a commentary on how we’re all divided and fight because of our differences and was represented as the tribes and the Planet. 

Rain on me was about how we all have internal struggles. Hard to spot in the video but she’s literally connected to a machine and the mini her and ariana are a projection of what’s going on in her mind. Trying to dance through the sadness.

911 tried to represent the chaos of her psychotic break and medication, etc.

Plastic doll about toxic fame culture, etc.

The only thing that doesn’t make sense to me is the album cover. Music is supposed to heal but here she’s trapped under sine wave symbol (sound).

When I first heard the title I was so excited for it to be a really cool concept where different songs represented different colors and emotions… kinda like a synesthesia / colorwheel experience. And then none of that happened, and Chromatica meant nothing.

I mean, even ignoring the fact Gaga offered up many explanations (which others posted about), at the end of the day, the answer is: it’s the title of Lady Gaga’s 6th studio album.

Like, the fact she offers us concepts - loose or not - to support her art is not required, nor was it ever really expected out of a pop album. This fanbase has an obsession with “cohesion” and holding every lyric, song, and visual she releases during a campaign to an impossible standard of consistency to each other and some overarching theme that may or may not be there.

Id love to see the analyses of how the titles of “Baby One More Time,” “Talk That Talk,” “Camila,” “Positions,” “Prism,” “4,”  “Bangerz,” and more have a deep yet clear meaning that relate to every single track on the albums and music videos.

We hold Gaga to a high standard because is the best. Her first three albums were extremely cohesive with appropriate titles that highlighted the overall theme of these works. She is more than just a pop singer, she is an artist. It makes sense that we would analyze her works deeply. It's part of being a passionate fan.

The albums you mention have very simple titles. Simple = easy to project your own interpretations onto. Chromatica is a highly specific, made up word that she bestowed upon this album. Why wouldn't we want to understand it more deeply?

ARTPOP is not vague at all. Pop culture was in art, now art's in pop culture in me.

this was the biggest let down for me. they literally designed tribes, logos and color-coding for... absolutely nothing. she could have made that such a huge marketing tool to promote the album like "represent your tribe/pick your tribe" and culminated that into a tour where people could come dressed up in tribe colors and she would have a different act with songs repersenting each tribe (ie. songs 1-4 are the kindness punk songs with a color-coded costume, etc.) such a waste of a great concept.

I was making a joke since that was basically summarized into one line. Joking aside, I feel like the intent for ARTPOP was a lot clearer though, it was just very poorly executed. But the whole idea was to push the boundaries of music by experimenting what "pop" meant and creating more experimental songs (like Aura etc.) with a vol. 1 and a vol 2 that went even further, an app that encouraged fans to create art from the music, etc. It was a very clear concept to me and I remember being hyped for it until the album came out and nothing was as great as they said it was going to be.

Chromatica on the other hand was very, very poorly explained AND executed.

I was joking too! My issue with ARTPOP is that every track is a different theme. It sounds like a really fierce RuPaul album to me, with no cohesion whatsoever. What is it about? Art? Sex? Drugs? Astronomy? Goddesses? Love? Cosmetics? Fury? Fashion? Performance?

It's a mess for me.

I see where you‘re coming from. I love Chromatica but in my mind the album is tightly connected to Gaga‘s psychosis and other mental health struggles she faced after Joanne. It‘s the album Gaga had to make in order to fully heal and move onto Mayhem. She seemed so down and depressed in almost all interviews she did back in 2020. Something just felt very off imo. 

Mayhem feels completely different. She seems to be calm, happy, full of energy and finally satisfied. Her spark is back. I‘m so proud of her and her growth, when I look back at Chromatica, it almost feels like a nightmare, even though I love the album, and I believe she does as well, it‘s very different to previous albums and Mayhem. I don‘t even know what I‘m trying to say, it‘s something I‘ve been thinking about for a while. Her latest performances, interviews, she‘s in a much better place and I‘m so glad she has overcome such a difficult period in her life.

I’m pretty sure that Chromatica was meant yo be real complex concept at some point but was rolled out really poorly because of the pandemic.
