monstertoronto 10,031
The band Tennis just released their final album and decided to write a pretty scathing review of Pitchfork and their reviews of their albums. Their post has received mixed reviews lol. It’s interesting to see an artist directly respond to Pirchfork for their usually dismissive and pretentious reviews. 2 2 5
Nagini 2,037
I'm not reading all that nor do I know who Tennis band is, but I support. If you don't make music or art, the value of your opinion is at the bottom of the totem pole. That's why they are the artist and we are the public. It's just the truth... honestly they seem like a bunch of weird keyboard warriors eating Fritos chips with a thesaurus on their lap ready to **** on all of these artists when they have no experience or knowledge of how to make music. But we will support PF for their 8/10 for Mayhem. So thank you keyboard warriors
PartySick 159,757
Read them tbh. How are you gonna say you know the backstory behind a song but you choose to ignore it in favor of your own incorrect perception of it then be critical from that view point and still believe you're writing a legitimate review? You're not even reviewing the actual piece anymore, my guy. You're reviewing your own imagination. 🌸Flourishing and vibrant🌼 7

It’s like mansplaining but in “review” form.
27monster27 12,983
Good. From wanting 17 year old Britney Spears to grow up on drugs, to "subtley" saying women like Madonna are self absorbed for sharing their personal struggles simply because they are women, to shaming Halsey for sharing her cancer story, critics deserve to be called out like this. More artists need to do this. he/him/his

There is so much misogyny embedded in our culture that people rarely call out and it’s about time.

Bronco 10,700
Honestly good for them. Pitchfork sum everything wrong with music critics now. Its no longer magazine columnists with a love of a specific genre writing up actual reviews of musical content. Its now just failed journalists writing deliberate ragebait for a crumb of attention.

We may not always like what they have to say, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an artistic pursuit. They go through the same process any writer does, only their subject is other forms of art. They have to work at their craft, learn it’s particulars, create a voice of their own, and must learn to engage with different mediums on a critical and in depth level. That’s what all artists do. Not to mention, many people who do media criticism whether it be for film or music do indeed have experience working within the industry they critique, or at the very least work closely with those who do. I also don’t like Pitchfork. Never have. But it’s incredibly ignorant to imply that criticism writers and journalists aren’t artists. The issue at play here is that they are reviewing artists in a discipline they often have no artistic skills within. would you expect a 5-star Michelin Chef to be able to explain to you what is good or bad about the production and vocal stacking on Mayhem? Some artists do have wonderful artistic skills that transfer across disciplines but a lot of them don't. I also don't think the level of artistry required between writing a review and crafting a poem is even remotely comparable.
