Australia’s Labor Party retains power

Brisbane and Sydney, Australia CNN —

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has secured a second term in office in a disastrous night for his conservative rivals, as voters chose stability over change against a backdrop of global turmoil inflicted by US President Donald Trump.

Australia’s return of a left-leaning government follows Canada’s similar sharp swing towards Mark Carney’s Liberal Party, another governing party whose fortunes were transformed by Trump. The loss of Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton’s seat mirrors that of Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.

While Australia wasn’t facing the same threats to its sovereignty as Canada, Trump’s global tariffs and policy swings have undermined Australians’ trust in the US, according to recent surveys.

Albanese’s victory makes him the first Australian Prime Minister to win re-election for two decades and he will start his second term with at least 87 seats in the 150-seat lower house, according to the most recent estimates.

A clearly emotional Albanese took the stage to cheers just before 10 p.m. local time to thank Australians for choosing a majority Labor government, defying predictions both major parties would lose seats.

“In this time of global uncertainty, Australians have chosen optimism and determination,” Albanese said, at the Labor victory party in Sydney.

The global backlash is taking hold. I am especially happy that much of it is Anglosphere based because it sends a much more direct message to the US.

Idk if anyone on here knows them (maybe some Little Aussies do?), but we once again need to give credit to The Juice Media for spreading the word on how to make change in Australia.

This is their Instagram:

They also have a YouTube account:

As someone from the US who knows mostly nothing about Australian politics, they have helped to keep me in the know about at least the basics of Australian politics, such as preferential voting.

(This sounds sponsored, but it's not. Sadly I don't think it'd be possible anyway because I am not in Australia lol.)

I have never watched an election outcome more intently (and with so much wine). But to watch LNP get wiped out was a real moment of peace. Even my far right parents had to laugh at Peter Dutton losing the election AND his seat.

I wish I was following it, I'd just gotten back from a long flight and fell asleep that arvo before the polls closed.

When I woke up hours later and remembered where I was and what what century I was in, I was like "oh ****, I gotta check the election results!" :laughga:

Now hoping Albo sticks with his promise to wipe 20% off student loan debts. I'd get about $10k taken off :vegas:

Do you feel him sir?

Now I definitely need someone to ask Trump how he feels about the liberal party of Australia losing :ladyhaha:

Thank god. Please let this sentiment trickle over to New Zealand in our elections next year. Conservative governments destroy everything for the sake of greed and prejudice

One thing I've been saying about this global trend towards electing conservative governments is that hopefully people get a really good look at how awful they are, and how bad life becomes for everyone during their terms, and the pendulum swings far in the other direction

For example the ONLY silver lining of a Trump presidency I can see, would be if if radicalised and opened the eyes of the public to how bad conservatives are and sways people towards more liberal ideas. Hopefully after Trump kickstarts the downfall of the American empire they decide to elect some radically liberal, let wing politicians

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

God I WISH we lived a world where third parties actually stood a chance but it's just not the reality. At least within our governments they get more seats to still have an input!

To clarify, I’m not talking about a majority Government with a minor party in power- I’m talking about a minority government.

We’ve had a minority government before with the Gillard government and for a small window it looked like it was possible for this election too, but seems like a complete Labor tsunami.
