Billed as her long-awaited return to the dancefloor, the record comprises 13 house-flavoured bops (including international chart-topper ‘Rain on Me’) bookended by gorgeous orchestral interludes, all produced by dance heavyweights ranging from BloodPop & Tchami to Axwell & Skrillex. Gaga described Chromatica as “dancing through [the] pain”, & that’s evident in the lyrics, which mask deep, meltdown-level sadness under a veneer of dancefloor euphoria. The album filters love, belonging, resilience, & depression through the prism of dance music, all the while articulating Gaga’s increasingly fraught & complex relationship with her fame, her Little Monsters, & the very nature of who ‘Lady Gaga’ is in 2020. Although the Chromatica era was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it wrapped up in style with a brutalist-inspired stadium tour & accompanying streaming special.
