The official Trump store is now selling red "Trump 2028" hats for $50 amid repeated suggestions by President Donald Trump and his allies that he could run for a third term in 2028.

Though his comments are often made jokingly, the president has said in recent weeks that he is not joking about pursuing a third term.

The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution says, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."

In March, Trump told NBC's Kristen Welker he was "not joking" about considering a third term, adding that there were "methods which you could do it."

Trump said one such method could involve having Vice President JD Vance lead the Republican ticket in 2028, with Trump as his running mate. Vance could then resign once in office in 2029, allowing Trump to assume the presidency for a third time.

According to the 12th Amendment, anyone who is "constitutionally ineligible" to serve as president also cannot serve as vice president.

Almost half of the Republicans who identify as members of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement have said President Trump can run for a third term in office despite being term-limited by the Constitution, according to a new poll.

A SurveyUSA poll of 2,491 registered voters found that 21 percent of all respondents said Trump was eligible for a third term in the White House, while 49 percent of MAGA-identifying Republicans said the same.

Steve Bannon, who hosts the War Room podcast and served as White House chief strategist during Trump's first term, has also suggested the president will win the 2028 election.

In an interview on Real Time With Bill Maher on April 11, Bannon said he had a "team of people" working on circumventing the 22nd Amendment, without specifying further. Bannon previously suggested the Constitution's wording would allow Trump to run again, as his two terms were not consecutive.

Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, introduced a joint resolution in January to amend the part of the Constitution that prevents a president from being elected more than twice.

Ogles proposed that the 22nd Amendment be changed to say no person shall be elected to the office of president more than three times, nor serve any additional term after serving two consecutive terms. The amendment's wording would prevent former two-term presidents, such as Barack Obama and George W. Bush, from running for a third term.

Republicans who introduce legislation to change the 22nd amendment are absolute clowns and a waste of tax payer money.

Considering that the two term policy is such a basic part of American law, and so much of the stuff he’s trying to do is getting shot down, I’m not concerned about this becoming a reality. Even if there is an amendment made, the audacity to believe that he would win again is hilarious and embarrassing considering his reputation at this point. 
Honestly selling this as merchandise is the part of this that bothers me most. It’s so frustrating and embarrassing as an American to see t-shirts of this man’s mug shot and bloody ear bandages and “2028” hats sold as merchandise. It does nothing but promote the sheer moral wrongness and lack of human decency that he and his followers promote, and tricks gullible, regular people into thinking it’s okay.

You may want to reconsider the “audacity to believe he would win again is hilarious…” portion of this.  We should know by now that ANYTHING can happen because it’s now possible to brainwash the population on a mass scale.   IMO the end game here is to little by little erode trust in American democracy as we know it, eventually breaking up the US.  There’s “the former Soviet Union,” and they want there to be “the former United States.”

I would argue that Americans are predictably stupid, however. The fraction of the electorate that often decides things just vote for the opposite of who holds the White House when it’s perceived things are going badly. And it turns out that still holds true even when the alternative to the incumbent is someone as awful as Trump. I think everyone was curious if there was a line those people wouldn’t cross to follow that pattern, and we found out the answer is no.

I don’t actually think Trump is all that special. It’s clear now that any Republican that was up against Biden or Kamala (with her campaign as she ran it) would have taken the presidency. Frankly, someone like Haley may have actually ran up higher margins than Trump in the general. The most damning evidence is how the blue state margins shrunk in places like NY, NJ, MN. People just really didn’t have a good impression of the Biden administration.

3 years from now Trump will be in Biden/Kamala’s position. He’ll actually be in a worse position, based on how poorly the economy is on track to perform moving forward. There is not going to be appetite for another Trump term (except from his cult), even if it were not expressly forbidden by the constitution. Don’t even get me started on the absolute lead balloon a Vance-Trump 2028 ticket would be. The optics are absolutely horrible.

That being said, I absolutely expect him to try. At the very least, it is going to turn the GOP’s primaries into a total clusterf*ck, and that’s going to be extremely entertaining to watch.
