Not at all the same. Calculations were very much so still done by hand back then. Being the first to the moon was the equivalent of the Pyramids to Egyptians at the time. And it started funding higher education for the masses in the US. The Space Race was a huge catalyst leading to the Information Age. This is just for fun and show. 

I'm no fan of Elon or Trump and would like to see them removed from positions of influence and power.  However, the problems that need to be solved before Trump took power will still be there when they leave power.  I believe space exploration is important for the same reasons that innovative technology, scientific discoveries, and medical breakthroughs have helped humanity in the past.

As someone who grew up on the space coast and has my windows rattled by rocket launches every day, this:

Is not a space mission  and it's an insult to the bravery of real astronauts, the intelligence of scientists, and the endeavoring human spirit to explore and learn about the universe we live in.

They could have put a satellite in orbit or started contruction on a replacement for the ISS or any number of exciting scientific pursuits but sure, launch a fading pop star for a blurry photo op so some billionaires can break an arm jerking themselves off, why not.
