Ziggy 11,874
aesthetically none of it fits. that's basically the only reason imo. If MR had been, like, her biggest hit ever then she'd probably make it work like Shallow, but it's not so...Shallow gets the Joanne slot. Let's just admit that Gaga wanted to not include those 3 albums 😭 John Wayne gets taken up by Judas which fits even *better* and MR was overtaken by Shallow. She has other songs that are better liked overall that fit even better. Joanne isn't bad but for *this set* she has other songs that more readily work and are more beloved.

Die With A Smile too, to a lesser extent The real reason is that she has a catalogue of 17 years now, she can't just sing something from every album, this isn't the Eras Tour. She clearly has her favourites and that's fine (I say that as someone who thinks ARTPOP is her best and I love Joanne) Here's the thing: She has priorities with a Coachella setlist. 1. Public appeal. She's not just playing to super fans. 2. Promote her latest album. 3. Appeal to fans. In that order, though 1 & 2 were kinda lumped together in this case bc of Mayhem's success so far. That means that among 20ish songs, she has to have a narrative, a flow, promote an album, and reference the songs of yesteryear that people know. So maybe John Wayne could have fit, but Judas and Scheiße cover similar territory, are more beloved fan favs and aesthetically fit a little more of the gothic vibe. We can't count HBDUWM, DWAS, or Shallow as "not fitting" because those songs are either HUGE hits with the public or in the first one's case both from the album and a clear commercial standout. The fact of the matter, unfortunately, is none of Joanne is as much a fan favorite as material from BTW so it's getting the boot. The Joanne era got its representation with Shallow bc like it or not that became the biggest hit from that Joanne-ASIB era of her career. It's not that those songs you mentioned couldn't be made to work it's that being real, they're just not as popular of deep cuts as Judas (which is basically one for how much they tried to bury it lol), BM (which is TikTok viral atp), and Scheiße. The setlist was very very strategic imo and didn't really leave room for stuff that didn't fit that strategy unlike coachella 2017 which was kinda whatever she wanted lmao So strategic she even cut out her first #1 and one of her 5 most recognizable hits. If she wasn't SO deadset on performing so much of Mayhem we may have gotten some other albums but those songs just don't fit as well as other deep cuts picked or are less popular than the ones picked. That's basically what it comes down to.
marymagdalene 11
I think the Joanne album is more for acoustic live performances. One of my favorite albums but not very GAGA like many of her other albums are.
TEANUS 15,110
Joanne is not very Coachella friendly in my opinion. Hell Gagachella 1.0 was like 6 months after the album and she only performed 3 songs from there, one of them being a remix of the era’s sole hit hahah. I’m def more gagged about ARTPOP and Chromatica being paid dust! bim 465
I was at weekend 2 and went into the show with no spoilers. I didn’t even realize she skipped Joanne, ARTPOP and Chromatica until after the fact when someone pointed it out. It didn’t feel like anything was missing, and I genuinely love all of her albums including the three jazz ones and joker. The setlist was perfect, told a great story, and scratched many itches. Whatever choices were made definitely worked well. The show is getting nothing but high praise. 1
