That being said, I definitely align with being an American Democrat when it comes to social/human rights issues/etc. I have been so alarmed by the tariffs issue, but my partner, a registered Republican 🙄, sent me this clip today (link pasted at the end of this post) and it does make me feel confused about how to feel about the tariffs. Is there a politically intelligent Democrat in this group that would have an emotionless, logic-/fact-based response to the following clip that backs up the "tariffs are bad" argument? I am not looking to start a fight; I want reasons to agree with you and have a justified counter-argument POV on the topic. Thanks! https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHWoJ1xy73T/?igsh=Ym9pcDV6NTVmNm55 A couple notes to help your rebuttal: 1. The Trump administration has no plans or legislation in place to actually facilitate bringing more manufacturing back to the US. It’s not like these tariffs are being installed after passing a huge manufacturing bill that facilitates and incentivizes new supply chains, new factories, and provides a comprehensive framework for exceptions. They’re literally just telling companies big and small to “figure it out.” (And by the way, the mega corporations that would have the capital to relocate everything to the US will likely build highly automated factories that don’t actually create manufacturing jobs.) 2. Blanket tariffs make no sense. There can be a place for targeted tariffs to make adjustments to specific industries. For example, that lady cited 5 industries critical to security…just tariff those! Not to mention, many things we just can’t make in the US due to climate and natural resources, so why tariff those countries where importing from them is literally the only option? That’s just a tax hike with no upside. Blanket tariffs MAKE NO SENSE. 3. There are SO MANY easier, less painful, and less time consuming ways to redistribute wealth to the middle class…but that would involve taxing the 1% and regulating corporate greed, so no wonder the Republicans conveniently ignore those options. Shadow 6,707
The Trump administration was goaded into pausing these tariffs, because nations like Japan were selling, dumping US Treasury bonds... And the extreme tariffs against China are still in effect... Stand in the light, cast your shadow.
OMF 3,677
Tragic. And again why fight China so much when most things produced are made there? Was it China’s fault that the USA and most western countries shifted production there decades ago? Are they supposed to feel bad for it? Ffs

TylerMedeiros 864
As a private American citizen let me just be clear: Trump and these crazy Republicans do NOT reflect on our country as a whole. On paper they do. This GOP/Trump administration is a stain on our nation… but it isn’t who we are!! We believe in FREEDOM and it’s so disgusting to the vast majority of American’s what is happening. This is absurd. We apologize for the rest of the world. as the saying goes, “you don’t quit the job, you quit working for the manager”. This is exactly how so many of us US Citizens, etc. feel. Trump is the biggest threat to democracy through the entire world. Please look out and pray for us. We are showing up in the streets and protesting, peacefully. God protect our troops, and may God protect the United States of America. we are the Statue of Liberty, and the resistance. YEET

Thank you very much for your thoughtful response! I definitely (already) agree with you on point 1, but you definitely make a lot of sense with points 2 and 3. I appreciate your comtribution and the time it took to write that out for me. I feel like the demonized "leftist agenda" has its heart in the right place, but most of the people chosen to advocate for it end up looking almost as loony as the current administration. Obviously I don't have the answers, but I hope someone(s) who does steps up to the plate and saves us before it's truly too late! As a Floridian, I feel doomed and powerless!
