atemybrain 2,075
Hate that it was tied to *that* movie because it truly is a masterclass in vocal ability and production. Even if jazz isn't your cup of tea, you can't deny the care and passion for music that pours out of this record. I would die to see that Harlequin live session she recorded. MOT 2,847
Yep. I love it. They're a bunch of classic songs, which is a good start, and her voice really does shine imo. And I like the fact that she hasn't just recorded them straight. As a companion piece to JFAD, the idea seems to have been that each track would start straight and gradually become unhinged, and I think they pulled that off well and it's fun. Nessun Dorma 3,077
When Harlequin was released I was mesmerized and fascinated by it! Six months have passed and the feelings remain the same. I’m so grateful she did it! My top 3 Gaga albums are Mayhem, Joanne and Harlequin 1

hamartia 551
(Omg this turned into a wall of text sorry lmao ) The way she uses every element of her voice on that album is so impressive, yet it never feels like she's showing off or doing "tricks" just to prove she can. She sounds so sure of herself and proud of her voice and her technique without it sounding like a "sing-by-numbers". I found her other jazz work to be a bit alienating as it sounded (to me) like she was trying way too hard and it felt almost inauthentic - kind of like when you hear a little kid sing Whitney Houston, and they hit all the right notes and have a powerful vibrato, but there's no ~feel~ to it bc they don't truly know what they're singing. My least favourite Gaga voice is when it sounds like she's yelling "look at how well I can sing!!!!" to the audience (that clip of her singing BTW backstage on The Monster Ball tour dvd makes my skin crawl ) And I get why she would be singing at an 11 on her other jazz projects because she's with freaking Tony Bennett so of course she wanted to do him and the music justice - but for Harlequin there's this level of assuredness and coolness where she sounds so at ease with her voice and like her heart is just beaming out of her like a ray of sunshine It would have been so easy for it to sound like another cover album of her doing jazz karaoke, but it's somehow never cloying or self indulgent. Listening to it feels like she's sat you down as a friend and just wants to share some songs with you. It's so special it's almost magical; a real peek into her mind

Ronk 14,631
I think it's underrated. So is Mayhem, actually. Both are 10/10. My favorite two albums. I live outside the space time continuum. 1
Trevstar4 242
Just stopping in to say I also thoroughly enjoyed Harlequin and to this day I still listen to if my friends could see me now, and that’s life each day! Such performance quality!
