President Trump on Monday said the U.S. will apply an additional 50% tariff on imports from China if the Asian nation doesn't withdraw its plan to impose a retaliatory 34% import fee on American products.

In a post on his Truth Social app, Mr. Trump said that "any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those initially set."

He added, "Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th."

On April 2, Mr. Trump announced so-called reciprocal tariffs on imports from about 90 nations, adding to a 10% global tax applied to all products shipped to the U.S. Describing the announcement as "Liberation Day," the president said the new taxes are needed to erase trade imbalances between the U.S. and other countries, ranging from China to members of the European Union.

I don’t think China is going to back down. This is the biggest opportunity they will ever have to knock the US down - particularly in the tech sector. And at a time when all of America’s biggest trade partners are scrambling for alternatives and new alliances.

Guess it’s closer ties between Europe and China etc. Tbh, as someone from the UK, it’s so difficult to trust the US again with regards to trade and other things and it will take decades for us to be assured they won’t go with a nutter who does things like this again. Flipping every four years between common sense and insanity is just way too risky and the rest of the world will feel the same. This isn’t fun and games in the long run for the US, this could decimate the US and result in the dollar no longer being the reserve currency of the world. If that happens, the US is in 36 Trillion Dollars of debt, it would be strangled to death by the interest. Very dangerous times for them. Someone said it best a few days ago asking where the Democrats are at the moment, where the hell were voters in November!?

20 years ago this may have worked.

But China's export market to the US is worth less than 10% of their total exports.

Obviously any reduction in trade will hurt, but China's holding the Aces here. And they know it.

I've long said China will win WW3 without a single shot being fired. And judging by how quickly they brought Taiwan, SK & Japan into talks on strengthening economic ties and how they've already tapped up the UK's Chancellor. They're fully prepared for this trade war.

I know im being selfish but Im lowkey temporarily slightly relieved hes got a more divided attentiom now on tarrifs instead of just obsessing with Canada "cuz were nasty, nasty people to deal with"

Before Canada and Mexico were getting the full brunt of it with Canada for some perplexing reason getting the most threats

Were the only major trading partner to the USA that has close to balanced trade (there is a deficit but its small), and more importantly the US has a trade surplus with us in Manufacturing which is the main thing hes trying to revive

Maybe someome finally mamaged to get that clear to him :toofunny:
