This is sadly true. Years ago on YouTube I made a comment saying how said it was that white people used the N-word, and I had three immediate replies telling me to "calm down" and that I was annoying/overreacting. he/him/his

Also nobody knows if they were forced to sing these songs or the slurs because these kpop companies are HELL. They were so young and probably had no clue. I’m pretty sure they’re sorry and feel ashamed now. TELL THEM QUEEN. We all do make mistakes, did the gurls kept the problematic behavior? Na-uh. They learned and grew. They are so young in the training days. Gosh. Give grace people. "And I still love you even if I can't see you anymore."

I also dont live in the U.S. I'm asking, not referring to Blackpink, but people in general, in my country there are a lot of str8 rap-music fans here who do say the N-word when covering songs that have lots of N-word. It’s considered in bad taste generally. I think there’s kinda two camps: - people who said it but when told it was not good to do so stopped - people who said it and DEFEND saying it bc the artist said it so they can. i usually find camp 2 are people who kinda get off saying slurs tbh
LOVEDRUG 10,457
Yeah they're teenagers here doing an in-company performance, likely under duress. It's come out that around two decades ago, it was normal for vocal coaches to beat K-pop trainees who didn't hit certain notes during practice. It's not okay for them to say it, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if they were explicitly told by their management or vocal coach to sing every word. Context is very important. They're not saying it in a video of them having fun. It's during an audition, and just like in the west, you often don't have control over what you sing during an audition.
vanna shintuyu 10,451
I know this is wildly off topic, (kinda. You can see Rosé doing one at the very end) but I'm so relentlessly glad that the late 00s 10s trend of doing moody/ironic/acoustic covers of hiphop & rap songs died forever ago. I partially blame Alanis Morissette fka butthole
Zaskar 3,911
We should have a derogatory word for white colonisers as well…. Like britishers and french and spaniards shouldn’t be let go so easily…..

I don't see how that contributes direct or indirectly to racism anywhere. using it constantly when you're a non black/POC with other people, I'd say problematic, or suspicious to say the least. using it as a slur to offend a person, a group of people or all black/POC, jail. and get that I'm saying those things as a brazilian white-ish gay man who lives in the most discriminated region of the country (northeast) in a state with a percentage of 80% of black people living here, the highest among all of our territory. so calling eachother here "negão", "preto", "nega", "negada", "neguinho", "meu nego", "meu preto", "minha nega", and so many other vocatives that relate to being black, even if the person you're addressing to is the palest albino on earth, is as usual as americans believing the world resumes to their culture, politics and systems. But that's the problem. It is a slur. For some in Black communities it's different and used freely. Obviously it's used in music. I'm not saying it doesn't have it's time and place (even though I personally hate it because of its origins). I just think it's kinda funny how we're supposed to just be okay with some Korean teeny boppers using it just because they didn't know. I get that people make mistakes and we should move on if they can at least acknowledge that what they did was inappropriate or that they didn't know better. And obviously I'm not trying to impose an ethnocentric morality on linguistics to people not from America, but don't expect to sell records from certain communities if you're going to be slinging slurs around in your performances. Lucas 25,831
The main thing that kpop idols learn is to avoid all controversies and scandals, I doubt these teenage girls covering this song meant any harm or really knew what they were doing. Also this is AT LEAST 10 years old, before their debut. Like, 10 years ago, as a non-american, I'd never know that singing the n word was bad and I'm sure this applies for a lot of people outside of the USA. I have to inform you though that outside of the USA, 10 years ago (which is probably around when this video was filmed), most people didn't know that singing the n word was not okay or what it even meant. I myself (non-american) thought it was just a random name like "dude", "guy"... Edited March 31 by Lucas
PopMusicForever 625
So they should be fully cancelled for using the N-word now?
