Cute but is it really worth the extra hundred gallons of water it took to make it happen?

Idk if we should be condoning this stuff on gagadaily. Sorry to be negative Nancy about it but oof.

Source? The environmental impact of AI has been way blown out of proportion by people on the internet and people keep parroting that it’s bad without looking into it themselves. It is absolutely NOTHING compared to the endless plastic and endless war.

I think there's an enviromental impact that has to be taken into account for sure, but that doesn't mean the technology itself is useless or damaging. Every new technology has been refined to be more efficient with time. In the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution, factories had a much bigger environmental impact than they do today. The fact they used to have a big impact wasn't a valid reason to illegalize them or shame those who use them, but instead campaign in order to make them more efficient.

Whether we want it or not, AI as a technology is here to stay, and arguments that will be left void in 5 years time as the technology advances and becomes more efficient won't contribute much to anything. Computers themselves used to be more damaging to the environment in the 90s than they are today. Nestlé is privatizing and stealing water from impoverished communites of the Third World. I think, if we want to take care of water, that is a more pressing matter.

Does all of this mean AI can do no wrong? No, absolutely not. AI is a tool, and in and of itself it is neutral. However, the way it is used and the interests it personifies can make it better or worse. We should support a more efficient, democratic, open, and people-centered AI approach that can last in time and be made for the people to make their lives easier. AI has much potential on things like economic planning and infrastructure design that can really make a difference in the quality of life of millions. We should campaign for it to be centered on those things instead of other, more speculative things.

MIT. Check their news section; they have a summary of the environmental impact of today's AI. Plastic and war are environmental issues too but don't have much to do with this.

Yeah, and it'll be very beneficial in several areas of life. It is a very new system. Time and development should increase efficiency and lead to a less harmful impact on water and the general environmental, so shouldn't we maybe wait to use it frivolously until it doesn't suck up enough energy to power a small village in order to spit out cartoon versions of album covers?

It doesn't work like that. Not only are there a thousand other things which cause a similar amount of damage, people also won't just start boycotting it overnight. Many industries now have incorporated AI into their work and the economic impact would be huge. Moreover, you're reducing a groundbreaking technology which took more than 50 years to develop to a mere "cartoon cover maker", and that just isn't being sincere nor representing AI for what it is.
