Britain and Germany update US travel advice after citizens detained

In recent weeks Britain has revised its advice for citizens travelling to the U.S., to include a warning that anyone found breaking its entry rules could face arrest or detention.

• Germany this week updated its travel advisory for the U.S. to emphasise that a visa or entry waiver does not guarantee entry for its citizens after several Germans were detained at the border recently, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.

A report in The New York Times last week said two German tourists were stopped in separate instances at the border crossing between San Diego and Tijuana.
Jessica Brösche was held for 46 days, and Lucas Sielaff was held for 16, according to the Times.

A third case, in which a German green card holder and permanent U.S. resident, Fabian Schmidt, was arrested on re-entry to the U.S., also made the news. He had been “violently interrogated” at Boston’s Logan airport for hours, stripped naked and put in a cold shower by two officials. Immigration agents had put pressure on him to give up his green card.  He had been placed on a mat in a bright room at the airport with little food or water, and denied access to his medication for anxiety and depression. He had been returning to the US on 7 March but his mother did not hear from him until 11 March, when he was transferred to hospital after collapsing. Schmidt and his mother moved to the US from Germany in 2007 and got permanent resident cards the following year.

• French scientist denied US entry after phone messages critical of Trump found
A French scientist was denied entry to the US this month after immigration officers at an airport searched his phone and found messages in which he had expressed criticism of the Trump administration, said a French minister.
"I learned with concern that a French researcher on assignment for the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) who was traveling to a conference near Houston was denied entry to the United States before being expelled," Minister for Higher Education and Research Philippe Baptiste said in a statement to AFP.
The measure was apparently taken because the scientist had expressed a personal opinion on the Trump administration's research policy, he added, but did not elaborate.
US authorities reportedly labelled the messages as “hatred towards Trump” that “could be qualified as terrorism”.
