Joanne has some incredible songs with great lyrics, Diamond Heart, Million Reasons, DiC, Joanne, John Wayne, Angel Down….they so much better than half of MAYHEM. Guess some fans need a class of music and art.

Ngl the fans that need a proper music education are the ones that need to make conversations about her albums either/or scenarios

But she also says "she needed it at the time" before that. Idk, at the time it def came from a genuine place and I'd argue it's the album where we got to see more behind the veil of Gaga and saw Stefani more, that's why I say it's her most genuine/personal tbh.

Honestly, ever since the Chromatica’s Zane Lowe interview I’ve listened to Joanne less and less due to her comments on Joanne and now it’s just the final straw for me cause I am very sensitive to these things and I’ll feel bad when I listen to it again 

It’s a shame cause I truly love this album.

Well yea, we been known it wasn't at all Gaga despite her saying it was her most personal at the time, like minus John wayne and Dancing in circles most songs could have been written by almost anyone, it missed that Gaga edge and a lot of components that make a song...well Gaga.

But it was a necessary departure to show the public that behind the crazy theres a genuinely kind and talented heart as well as just giving something different to not make the Gaga boring. 

Like I feel if she was a bit more in the right headspace it could have been a far greater album, it had the right elements but it needed an edge to make it pop out more if she worked with a bit crazier producers who would have pushed her a bit further.

I’m not discounting that she felt she needed it at the beginning and I understand where you’re coming from, I just think it is kind of ironic that she ultimately did say that she felt that it took her away from herself as well. It’s just interesting that she’s always dealt with the push and pull of competing needs/influences and it seems that Mayhem may be a departure from that all or nothing mindset.

Idk she’s also kind of pathological in her need to center her current work as the realest, often at the expense of her older stuff. I’m not saying she’s being insincere, but I think it’s also possible that she’s perhaps being a little too critical and I think her stance on her mental health applies well to her music as well: “that was authentically me at the time.”

How interesting it is to experience eras and then be able to see her reflect like this all those years later. I’ll admit I was 17 at the time and didn’t appreciate Joanne, but as I became an adult I have such love for this album and recognize how important is it to her growth. I think we could all tell something seemed off during the Joanne era, she seemed very broken, unsure of herself, and sad/very serious in most interviews. I’m so happy she’s in an amazing place and able to reflect so maturely on this era.

To be fair every artist does that, no one wants to get “this album is totally made for the charts and by my producers, I did it just for the money, my last album was the real me” on an interview

Eh, I think she’s perhaps a little more pre-disposed to do it than others, tho I think, aside from this moment, she’s been better about it this era

it’s so refreshing to hear her reflect on her past eras and basically confirm what we as fans knew deep down during joanne. there were glimpses of what made her great for sure, like the john wayne video and some decent songs on the album, but it felt like she wasn’t happy and was overly serious and the five foot two documentary is just so hard to watch. it felt like for a while she lost who she was as an artist. i’m so happy that she’s in a much better headspace lately and found her voice again
