James Lee Williams, better known as drag star The Vivienne, died from a cardiac arrest caused by the effects of taking ketamine, their family has said.

The performer's sister Chanel Williams said her family "continue to be completely devastated" by the death of the 32-year-old and will be working with a substance abuse charity to raise awareness of the dangers of the drug.

The RuPaul's Drag Race UK winner was found dead at their home in Cheshire in January, with celebrities and fans around the world paying tribute.

An inquest is scheduled to take place in June.

Cheshire Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the performer's death.

Simon Jones, Williams' manager and close friend, said the family felt it was important to share the circumstances of their death.

He said: "I hope by us releasing this information we can raise awareness about the dangers of ongoing ketamine usage and what it can do to your body."

The Williams family now hopes to continue this legacy by working with substance abuse charity Adferiad on a campaign aimed at opening up conversations about substance abuse and addiction.

Speaking for the family, Ms Williams said: "Ketamine is an extremely dangerous drug that is becoming more and more prevalent in the UK.

"If we can help raise awareness of the dangers of this drug and help people who may be dealing with ketamine addiction then something positive will come from this complete tragedy."

Ketamine, a powerful horse tranquiliser and anaesthetic, is a licensed drug and can be prescribed medically, but its usage as an illegal substance is growing among young people.

An awful drug. Just takes you to a psychological liminal space until it wears off. You've got to be in a dark place to want to linger there. RIP icon.

That was definitely not just ketamine but ok. Rest in peace.

Please respect the surviving family and let them share what they can.

But clearly she didn’t die from K but something that was laced with K (fentanyl or something).

this is so sad knowing how long she had been sober and open about the previous ket addiction :messga:

although we didn't need to know, i think it's good the family decided to disclose this, purely to bring awareness

possibly but it also could have been

someone that's previously had a tolerence could easily sniff or bomb ALOT when they relapse because of the amount they used to do before

I don’t usually put so much of my personal life on here but she was a recovering ketamine addict, as a recovering addict from alcohol seen people die after one bender when they relapse I can attest that if you relapse into addiction it’s entirely possible for the relapse to kill you.

I also think they should’ve kept all this info private because now people are gonna use this against drag queens and the queer community “do you want k addicts reading to your children” etc

While I understand the other user's desire to be sensitive, I agree: the family is not (to our knowledge) in this thread here right now.

Apart from a few case studies, I'm not seeing much evidence (at the population level) that ketamine alone can lead to cardiac arrests, at least on a predictable scale. It can definitely increase blood pressure upon usage, but that seems to be its main cardiovascular effect.

I think your point is valid -- there could have been other substances laced into the K, or perhaps Viv had been deliberately seeking other substances. And since Viv's family does want to raise awareness about drug abuse, it's in no way disrespectful to point out that a ton of drugs are laced with extraordinarily harmful substances, which can compound the risks of the target chemical.

Full disclosure, I myself have struggled with substance abuse disorder (alcohol, amphetamines, and cannabis), but I'm going on 3 years sober. I care a lot about this topic, and I think frank, open discussions should be encouraged.

The death inquiry outcome will be published publicly in the next couple weeks so I guess we'll find out if you're right.

Anyway... I always #JustSayNo to drugs. Its a slippery slope kids! Thats why I boycott BRAT
