Gaga did what Katy couldn't (1432 mini-review? Kinda?)

So, my coworker and I listen to a ton of music while prepping our little baked goodies and bread and junk. I'm kicking around the idea of seeing Katy this August so I figured "hey, let's listen to 1432". Welp, here are my takeaways

First, this album is so overhated and the poor quality is completely blown out of proportion. Like, points are made often on this site but c'mon, it's Katy Perry ffs  

Second, it makes me appreciate Mayhem and Gaga's artistry even more 'cause yeah, I liked a few songs but 1432 is far from what I'd call a "good album".

(The main point, read this if nothing else) My main description of Mayhem, the feeling I got after my first listen, is "classic but new". Gaga managed to evoke feelings of nostalgia in her oldest fans without rehashing the same stuff and 1432 feels like Katy's attempt at the same thing, a "return to form," but...I mean, we all know the nachos thing.

It literally took until track 9 for me to like something enough to take notice. "ARTIFICIAL" is kind of a bop tbh but, unfortunately, Katy really adds nothing to this song. The best part is JID's verse.

"WONDER" is actually super sweet and it was the first time I thought "wait, this kinda sounds fresh though?" and of course, it was produced by Stargate and Cirkut  complete with a couple lines from (who I assume to be) her daughter. This is the vibe I'd love to see Katy run with. She kinda captured that feeling in Smile, which is why it's my favorite album of hers.

"Don't let growing up get you down" encompasses who I believe she is as an artist. Silly, playful, light, some fun in an otherwise dark work. She should do more of that. Be the fun aunt society needs.

I like the next few songs, "I WOKE UP", "HAS A HEART", and "OK" are sweet but suffer from that dated vibe. Shocker, Luke produced them all and I promise I didn't look at the credits before coming to those conclusions but it's not hard to tell.

Allegations aside, Dr. Luke seems to be terrified of growing as an artist himself and you can feel both Katy's desperate attempt to recapture the spark found in Teenage Dream and Prism and Luke's inability to move on past 2013.

This literally is an album I would listen to if I wanted to transport myself back to the early 2010s and you can take that statement however you please.

All in all, it's just a weird sight. I properly joined the standom right when Applause vs Roar was happening but now it feels like Katy's tripping up while following Gaga.

If Smile was her Joanne, and 143(2) is her Chromatica, I fear we may be in for some Katy bops in a few years

Its more simple than that.

Katy can sing. She's a singer. End kf list.

Gaga can sing & write lyrics and music. And that's the key difference. 

Gaga is a lover of music, with a deep well of inspiration she regularly pulls from that diversifies her output.

I'm sure Katy can name inspirations, but its beyond clear she's pulling from a very narrow pool of Top 40 music from a specific era.

Every MPG who has stayed the course (Beyoncé, Madonna, Kylie, Gaga) all are able to delve deep into a large pool of musical influences. Katy just doesn't have that for me.
