Plus if you look at the characters a lot of the complaints about their appearances are EASILY explained by the fact the characters are older. Like Donkey has wrinkles, Shrek has wrinkles and is thinner, Fiona just has less youthful features and doesn’t have her braids or tiara. It's a redesign since they're using brand new 3D models for every single character. It's not unusual though most of the time not as noticable. For example they used new updated models for the characters in Frozen II though when you watch it you don't necessarily think about it. Which is the way it should be done In this case it isn't just a matter of ageing the characters or using an upgraded engine. They've deliberatly made them more "appealing".
