The "Abracadabra spell" explained (NOT satanic)

Before I say anything else, this guy knows his stuff and isn't one of the "satanic panic" people. Quite the opposite and he's recieved a lot of backlash for this video from religious nuts so i wouldnt read the comments.

I'm what many could consider an "occultist". I have been wanting to make a thread about this for a while, then this morning this video popped up on my feed and he's quite bang on in his interpretation.

FYI the "Woman in Red" she describes is the woman who rides the lion in the "Lust" card in my Aleister Crowley Tarot Deck (Thoth), which I use everyday and I love. All of what he is saying matches gaga's emojis and hints too of the moon, which in astrology is a feminine force (28 day cycles anyone?) and represents our emotions and intuition, where as the sun is a masculine force and is closely linked to our "ego". (My moons in Aries fml)

But yeah... He describes what I've been wanting to say quite well. It isn't a "satanic" spell, it is a spell in the context that that we all cast spells everyday with our words (we literally learn to spell (spelling) when we start school, it all goes back to ancient times before christianity took over and inverted everything). a good example of what i mean by this is that an insult can change someones entire day but so can a compliment. Lots of people in certain corners of paganism absolutely love this song, including myself. Everytime we sing this we are saying it. It's such a beautiful song too, Abracadabra means I create as I speak (or sing in this case). I'd avoid the comment section though cos it's full of oMg iLlUmInAtI people

None of this makes it sound better, it just makes conspiracy theorists look like they are right. Hes saying exactly what conspiracy theorists are saying, but he interprets it in a positive way because hes part of the occultist, so obviously he will see it as a good thing.

And just to make it clear, I dont believe conspiracy theorists or this guy, im just saying this video doesnt make it better

Yeah, and she's using it in her artistry. Bits of the chorus are just our gibberish  gaga lyrics as filler words, but the Amor and morta (love and death) parts along with much of the songs theme and some of the dance moves, it's basically a phenomenal piece of art with esoteric knowledge in it, it's not about whether you believe in it either, but ask anyone who has studied esoteric knowledge and they will tell you gaga knows what she's doing. She's phenomenal, I tell people this but with some people especially with this song it's like explaining the colour red to a blind person.

Not really, the conspiracy theories are mostly extreme religious people, usually Christians and Muslims. Even Buddhists and Hindus will be able to understand some of this.

Esoteric knowledge goes back to the pagan roots (which I am btw), but people hear the word spell and think omg Satan. Just like religion, occult and esoteric knowledge can be used for good or bad.

I'm not questioning her artistry or songwriting, it's not the case, it's just it's a simple abracadabra and people like this youtuber and others making such a big fuss out of it.. there's no point in discussing if it's satanic or not, because it's just abaracadabra, with amor, morta, gaga and that's it, not some deep satan worshiping "spell". it's honestly, not even a spell :laughga:

It's like making an essay over itsy bitsy spider.

and if you noticed, nobody's excusing Eminem's Houdini and abracadabra for satanic ritual :huntyga:

If Gaga is referencing Aleister Crowley, hes a man that believes in ritual magic, and wanting to bring demons and entities into the world. He also does magic and spells by using sexual rituals and sacrificing animals. So this video makes conspiracy theorists look right. So im not sure how this video makes things better..?

If you'll allow me to get a bit pretentious (or a lot) and play devil's advocate:

I really don't think Gaga wrote Abracadabra with truly deep, esoteric themes, let alone as spell. There are quite a few times where she's talking about how she wrote a song, and I'm almost positive she's just finding the meaning after the fact as well. I'd argue that, between Disease and Abracadabra, Mayhem's songs are less...personal and more...narrative? If that makes sense? Like they're still her songs about her experiences, but through a different, more fantastical lens.

Either way, there is an interesting idea in philosophy, while artistic intent is a major factor in the artwork, interpretation is potentially as important, if not more important.

Like, real talk, think about the Itsy Bitsy Spider, and you really could make an argument that it's a metaphor for the duality of nature, the importance of perseverance, or the pointlessness of a Sisyphean task. And the intent of the song could just be about how the author literally watching a spider get washed away in the rain. If someone really resonated with one of those arguments, then it wouldn't really matter to them what the intent was, they're just gonna see the nursery rhyme with a deeper meaning.

PhantomOfTheDance

Hi, also pagan here/slightly esoteric (it's complicated :bradley:)

I feel like Abracadabra refers to a lot of alchemical ideas, with the idea of integration of male and female, life/love and death to create the philosopher's stone/self (more touches of that in Disease). I understand this more from a Jungian perspective than esoteric or spiritual standpoint. The music video and melody of the song hints towards Phantom of the Opera, which pretty much focuses on Christine's judgement on males. Just some more food for thought cause your post resonated and made me realize this, especially with the Thoth card. A lady in red riding on a lion, which is mostly attributed to strength and male attributes in tarot.
