I mean, Nicki has always been camp, and has a predominantly gay audience. Sure, she is not an activist for gay rights, and she does not seem to give a quarter of a **** about gay people, but they were talking about the music.

I don't even like Nicki, but if being a "queer icon" is just making campy pop music that is influential in queer spaces, Nicki does qualify, as problematic as she is :iamfair:

Especially if you consider her biggest hits from her peak were undeniably in line with queer music & black queer music.

Super Bass, Stupid Hoe, Turn Me On, Feelin Myself, Flawless remix, Pound the Alarm, Starships etc

Hell the most popular part of her biggest album Pink Friday Roman Reloaded was the 2nd half where it was all Eurodance pop music.

Nicki is the queen of the dramas but she didn't helped the queer community by queerbaiting :saladga:

Girl, Chappell I admire you a lot fr but replace Nicki with Lady Gaga or Hayley Kiyoko instead :laughga:

On the other hand this argument works bc even Lil Nas X and many other queer artists quote her as one of their biggest inspiration but the queerbaiting thing was so unserious... :saladga:

And she's EVERYWHERE in queer spaces/culture. Specially for gen-z, you could hardly navigate the internet on gay spaces without finding Nicki; whether it is in the form of her music, her lyrics, a quote, a meme, her fashion, she's literally everywhere :laughga:

I can understand why a lot of people resist her as a queer icon: her unexisting activism, her rapist husband, her brother, her beefs, etc, I get it. But you can't deny she is an influential figure in the "queer" community.

She is. I'm not even her fan, but it's the truth :vegas:

I can take all 3 but I’m gonna assume Gaga was so obvious that it skipped her mind to mention bc…

on Nicki, I think she wasn’t a HEY LOOK GAY kind of artist but undeniably her bawdiness in music has flamboyant affectation and opened avenues for popular queer expression in music. She did do that. Tbh I’d say Rihanna was more of the sneak here bc she was just kinda everywhere. She wasn’t especially flamboyant or over the top just kinda largely popular so, sure, if you’re into pop she did her thing. Nicki and Madonna are valid choices but if you’re including Nicki and Rihanna omitting Gaga is kinda wild given Gaga had a similar impact Nicki did while mainstreaming a lot of the “casual drag” that Chappell does now. Gaga wearing face horns for Gayle King like it was her Sunday best is the most clear line between Chappell and any of these stars.

So here's what I'm assuming they're referencing. In which she essentially says that all of these artists owned SEXUALITY in their public image and in their music in order to allow Chapell to succeed. Aka Nicki talking about sex, Madonna talking about sex, Rihanna talking about sex, allowed for Chapell to talk about sex. Overall sexual conversation paved a space for queer music.

Y'all love to hate. It's so interesting to see from "Kindness Punks" who have had to defend their fav from the same malicious sh*t. If we believed everything reported online Gaga would probably have her second child with Bradley Cooper. Come on y'all.

I just wish she mentioned Gaga, it was an obvious answer, and she draws inspiration from her like she mentioned on past interviews. Maybe it was such an obvious answer that she skipped her, idk.

and we didn't get any interactions between them at the grammies :cyanlights:

Oh yes because whenever someone says Queer Music Icon all you can think of is Nicki :poot:

I don’t really care that Gaga didn’t get mentioned (I mean everyone knows who she is and what she did) but I can’t help but think Chappell is just saying whatever sometimes. She’s so hit or miss with her takes :partysick:

Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something?
