RFK Jr. wants to open "camps" for "addicts"

While President Donald Trump’s Health and Human Services nominee, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been scrutinized over his views on vaccines, farming, abortion and more, his perspective on treating one of the nation’s foremost health crises has received far less attention.

Before joining Trump’s team, Kennedy campaigned for president on a plan to treat addiction by creating “wellness farms” funded by tax revenues from federally legalized marijuana sales. “I’m going to create these wellness farms where they can go and get off of illegal drugs, off of opiates, but also legal drugs,” Kennedy said at a virtual event during his campaign, billed as a “Latino Town Hall.” 

Kennedy himself struggled with addiction when he was younger, including to cocaine and heroin, which he has spoken about publicly. He has heralded his faith and commitment to Alcoholic’s Anonymous’s 12 Step-program as his saving grace. Kennedy is a strong proponent of clean living as well, and said that the addiction treatment wellness farms he imagines would also treat people who are trying to get off anti-depressants, or other medications like those for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

50 million+ Americans are on some type of medication to treat a form of ADHD or depression. He's always likened those life saving drugs to drugs like heroin.

The US is about to kick all those people off their necessary medications, potentially herd many of them into forced "wellness camps", and treat them like criminals.

F*ck this f*cking country and f*ck everybody in the current administration and f*ck anybody who didn't vote for Kamala Harris.

I'm a recovering drunk. I love the thought of making it easier for people to get and stay sober if that's what they want. But everything about this plan scares the f out of me.

If it were a federally funded self help program filled with addiction professionals then it'd be a fantastic idea. I agree.

But it's not...it'd be forced captivity for people who do not need self help programs. He considers people on depression and ADHD drugs to be addicts. Taking those people off those drugs cold turkey could literally be deadly. And those that survive would be treated like criminals in line with how this country already treats addicts.

It's a short hop and skip away from culling the mentally ill, just like a certain German man 80 years ago.

Absolutely. Putting people in anything that resembles a camp is NEVER a good idea! EVER.

Why is “camp” in the title when that’s not what he said lol someone might say it’s semantics but lbr we all know what saying the word “camp” vs “farm” would make people think. Like if someone says “fat farm” they’re thinking of a place with questionable practices where you get skinny but if you said a “camp” for fat people that’s giving Nazi. Idk I think we need to be careful and not invoke imagery if that’s not what’s being said bc he isn’t talking about exterminating addicts he’s talking about a place with its own long history of abusive practices but that is notably quite different from a concentration camp.
