In a way it's sad that they can't serve their country anymore but if the country is against them... then they might as well not risk their life for a country that hates them you know

This!! As a trans woman, if the U.K. government tomorrow said they didn’t allow trans people to serve for their country - fine. It’s a set back in our rights, sure. We can campaign on rights. Why would anyone trans or otherwise, want to risk their life for people that do not even wish to acknowledge their very real existence and experiences anyway?

I remember Gaga making the prime rib of America speech to repeal don’t ask don’t tell, the law that prevented openly gay people from serving in the military. Think it’s time for a new speech on the topic.

So disappointing, but also so stupid. From a practical standpoint, don't you want as many people fighting in the army as possible? How does outright banning an entire group of people help in any way?

and banning an entire group of people that decided even after the struggles they've gone through being trans, they still decided they wanted to serve in the army!?

legit banning some of the strongest and resiliant people the army would ever even have the previledge of having lmao

in all seriousness, I’m a cis man so I have no say in this, but why would you want to serve a country that doesn’t even want you to exist?

Only if she's willing to be a figurehead for that movement.

Not to discount it but she made that speech while a respected and intelligent Democratic president was in office and Democrats had a supermajority in congress. It was completely safe to do. Next to no risk aside from selling a few less albums in rural areas.

Doing it now would whip up the MAGA base and piss off a deranged soon-to-be-dictator. She would have a full time fight on her hands.

And I'm absolutely here for that! I'd love to fall in line behind her. But I highly, highly doubt she wants that smoke. She just wants to sing, get married, and chill in her house. Which is fine.

Guys, military service isn't just about serving your country. For a lot of people it's the only opportunity they have to escape terrible home lives and hateful families. It also guarantees access to a college education and a lifetime of perks that only veterans and active service members get.

Nothing about this is good.

Thanks for talking me down, I was definitely just heated about it :fatcat: I'm just not a fan of the military-industrial complex in general, but there's no denying that there are some good benefits, especially for people coming from marginalized or underrepresented communities.

We can absolutely shame the military higher ups and the federal government, especially the "commander in chief", but I generally don't hold it against people who enlist.

There are some absolute freaks who join just for the chance to be violent but I mean...we can't assume :traumatica:

There's even a member here that managed to get away from her toxic family and start building the possibility for a better future for herself and that wouldn't have been possible for her without enlisting.

Trump is a disgrace. This man didn’t even serve for his country, he dodged the draft and used bone spurs as an excuse. Pathetic excuse for a man.
