Google removes Pride, Black History Month as holidays on Calendar app

Some Google Calendar users are angrily calling the company out after noticing that certain events like Pride month are no longer highlighted by default. Black History Month, Indigenous People Month, Jewish Heritage, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Hispanic Heritage have also been removed, according to a Google product expert.

One user called the move “shameful” and said that the platform is being used to “capitulate to fascism.” Over the last few years, there have been comments and media reports complaining about the presence of the notes, but now they’re gone.

Google confirmed it’s made changes to the default Calendar events, but with a different explanation about when and why. Here’s Google’s explanation of what’s going on, provided by spokesperson Madison Cushman Veld:

"For over a decade we’ve worked with timeanddate.com to show public holidays and national observances in Google Calendar. Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world. We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing — and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable. So in mid-2024 we returned to showing only public holidays and national observances from timeanddate.com globally, while allowing users to manually add other important moments."

I always knew corpo pride and black history celebrations were business decisions but I never thought they'd backslide so enthusiastically and quickly.

What is there to gain from this? The majority of people support black history and LGBTQ acceptance so you're pandering to the wrong crowds, f*ckers.

Google needs to be broken up.

I don't even understand why they're doing the things they're doing either. I know Trump and most Republicans couldn't give a crap one way or the other about our community but they're actively trying to hurt us.

They don't even get anything out of it. Anyone they'd impress with that garbage already votes for them.

They're just being cruel and all the work we've done to normalize being queer seems to have been standing on such shaky ground.

I'm not surprised. It was always performative to begin with. I never believed corporations ever truly cared about diversity.

I always hated how every company put a pride sticker on their store front or update their logo on LinkedIn in June and then change it back in July. As someone who works in corporate, I saw through how transactional and performative the whole thing was.

Diversity and inclusion requires commitment all year round. Not just a month or a day. This administration just gives corporations the excuse to not even pretend to care anymore.
