Lady Gaga is back

I feel the need to share my feelings because I'm overwhelmingly happy about this.

Some of you won't like this take but this is my honest opinion as a massive Gaga fan and I come from a place of love.

I feel like in a way we "lost" Gaga some time around 2016 and started to get her back some time in 2022, with last night completing a full return to form.

I remember having a hard time during the Joanne era hardly recognizing Gaga, like she suddenly became someone completely different. Her interviews, public appearences, her looks, the Joanna album cover and music videos, her whole artistry suddenly felt forced and inauthentic to me. Her mannerisms felt so foreign. Of course Joanne era had some good moments, but overall I felt like her fame, her career up until then, everything that went down with the BTWB and ARTPOP, it all took a toll on her in a way she perhaps won't come back from.

And then I started to really worry for her. During the ASIB campaign I felt like she was very reserved, she began to pant heavily while speaking in interviews, and everything she said sounded rehearsed. She felt very very insecure to me despite all the praise she received for the film.

Enigma in vegas came around and I hated it. I couldn't understand how such a brilliant artist can put on a show in such bad taste. And then she released Stupid Love, and I remember thinking to myself - this is the shell of the pop megastar she once was. Every trace of fierceness, innovation and character we all fell in love with in her early years was completely gone for me. Chromatica felt like a forced album to me, almost like a Bloodpop project featuring gaga's vocals. I thought she felt like she HAS to go back to being a popstar so she did everything a popstar "should" do without the essence. Again, the album had some great moments, but overall it felt so far removed from the once-in-a-lifetime popstar I fell in love with.

Now, something shifted for me in a big way with the Chromatica ball. I remember watching videos from the first night in shock, I almost cried. THERE SHE WAS. GAGA in all her glory, super confident, artisticly intriguing, commanding and fascinating. I didn't believe this day would come. it's like I recognised her again. But I was still nervous about what new music she'll come up with and wether it will give me the same exciting feeling.

DWAS, Harlequin and Disease really did it for me. I was sold. It's her again. musically uncompromising, completely original, truly exciting, and most importantly - the Gaga essence. Her aura was there. She's back. and something about last night just really sealed the deal for me. She looked so so happy and confident, she gave a perfect performance, won a well deserved grammy and used that moment to stand up for something important, and released her most convicting song in YEARS. To me Abracadabra is everything I didn't believe we well ever get from her again. her best release in over a decade. and MAYHEM as a whole album already feel so so authentic and moving, it's getting me truly thrilled and emotional.

She never went away, always been here, she is one of the most versatile artists ever existed and I am mad people simplify her as this dark pop persona, yes this is her best song in 10 years, but she never left, that's not true.

I'm glad that you're happy about last night, but Mayhem Gaga is definitely a mix of her past recent eras. Abracadabra has the house genre (Chromatica). She's wearing corseted gowns again (Joanne). And Die With A Smile is a soft rock ballad (ASIB, Joanne). She just returned to a darker sound and aesthetic and combined it with what she has learned before. And I love it!

I’m not talking about the music itself, but about everything she radiates. It’s not about dark pop, DWAS and harlequin are a part of this

Thank you for writing this cuz I totally feel the same. While I guess it was necessary for her to explore new avenues over the past decade and grow as a person, I did feel like we lost a lot of the Gaga we fell in love with after ARTPOP and I was losing hope we'd ever get that back. And now look at whats happening! OG+reinvented+refreshed Lady Gaga is back and coming for blood! And I'm confident MAYHEM will be her best album yet!

I think she's just in a very good state of mind right now. And that's great because she wasn't really in a healthy state of mind during the Born This Way Ball and ARTPOP eras as she has said.

she’s been very open about her mental health and we all can empathise how 2008-2014 must have felt like a massive rollercoaster for her 

with Michael she seems so secure and confident in herself and her craft, it’s beautiful to see and that’s permeated her music, videos and interviews, we can all see how happy she is

I completely hear and empathise with you…. It almost sounds too emotional, but it’s almost felt like a mother, daughter or sister had left home, and we were here watching her to try and find her way, not able to do anything… and then CBT, Harlequin and Disease were like these letters from her saying ‘I think I’m ready, I think I’m ready to love me again and be truly Gaga’………… and ABRA is literally like her knocking down the door, returning home, and that first embrace ….. that is accepting and ready to love in genuine way, acceptance and at peace with her self - including her past, her present and her future….

Nah i wrote a long answer, i don't really agree but i don't want to spread too much negativity. Many people are cherishing the return of the big production over the top Gaga that had a drive and nerve, who wrote songs i would have never liked if it wasn't for that passion and charisma. And i think most of us want to see that cause most people do like that kind of music in fact. I enjoy this new song, i do feel she's more in control of her emotions. I don't agree that she's all that comfortable on stage, nor interviews, nor really being this avant garde Gaga. Though i think that when she's in the set or on stage it probably sets her free. 

Thats enough sorry, to round it i feel that she would have been just very happy doing harlequin with the band and feels immense pressure to have to do something that she's not comfortable with. Gaga sort of came up with her sound by accident meeting and being influenced by other people. And in the height of her fame she was abusing alcohol and drugs. So it's not pretty trying to emulate those times and id imagine she at first thought she's need some substance to get there.. She came in terms with this reality and enjoyed the process, it seems. But that's it, it's her being a professional. That's my take, it's something that has to be constructed. So to me she accepted Gaga is indeed a product but isn't very ironic about it anymore.

I disagree. People saying or implying the old Gaga is back still never learned their lesson lol Gaga's been telling you all even now 😭 she's changed, and even now she's not the Gaga she used to be, but that's cool. So it's annoying when people kept saying old Gaga is back or wanting her to emulate her old Gaga self when she herself has moved past that.

Just say you love the new her, that's it.
