Abracadabra should have been the lead single

This song is sooo good, and the music video... to be honest, I think it's my second favorite music video from her.

It takes a smart brunette to play a dumb blonde.

Top 3 Gaga song for sure.

IMO Abracadabra makes Disease feel like a b-side. However, I get that releasing Abracadabra back in October would have limited its chances of being a hit… releasing it now, closer to the album, makes so much sense.

Abracadabra will now always be Mayhem’s lead single in my head though

Disagree.

"Disease" was the perfect opener since it also introduces us to the MAYHEM character.

I still prefer Disease and it's the song that deserved Bad Romance / Born This Way level of success but it is what it is. Abracadabra is incredibly dancey, did not expect it to be like that but love it too.

Disease is the correct first/ lead single to introduce us to the sound of the album.

I also feel like Disease was needed as a pallet cleanser. If we insist on talking about „the gp“ then I still think for most of them Shallow is the last song they connect with her. If Abra was the lead single they would have been more like „ohh, there she goes again with the word salat and the group dancing and stuff“ and the impact of her returning to form after 10 years would have gotten lost in the mix

I love both so whichever, but I'm glad this was released now because it's now our singular focus...

DWAS already hit number 1, Harlequin era (and JFAD floppage) is a good few months past, no holiday freeze, and it got good placement during the Grammys!

I agree, but I also think it's great that she released "Disease". I remember the rumour back then was that she wanted "Aura" to be a single (and many of us speculate that "Aura" was the end of the "Paparazzi" trilogy), but couldn't do it because the song wasn't safe enough for the general audience.

Her releasing "Disease" as the lead single felt like a revenge for "Aura" and all the fan favorite "not catchy enough" darker songs she couldn't release as singles in the past. It is a testament of her confidence as an artist, and I love that she did it, even if I think "Abracadabra" was a stronger choice.

I love how most of the replies here think Disease was the correct first release. And it is. It's an insanely good song, with a familiar vibe but completely adrift from her usual sound. And it was a good starting point for Mayhem's world building. A necessity for how the rest of it would tie together and make sense.
