However, I get that releasing Abracadabra back in October would have limited its chances of being a hit… releasing it now, closer to the album, makes so much sense. If we insist on talking about „the gp“ then I still think for most of them Shallow is the last song they connect with her. I remember the rumour back then was that she wanted "Aura" to be a single (and many of us speculate that "Aura" was the end of the "Paparazzi" trilogy), but couldn't do it because the song wasn't safe enough for the general audience. Her releasing "Disease" as the lead single felt like a revenge for "Aura" and all the fan favorite "not catchy enough" darker songs she couldn't release as singles in the past. It is a testament of her confidence as an artist, and I love that she did it, even if I think "Abracadabra" was a stronger choice. It's an insanely good song, with a familiar vibe but completely adrift from her usual sound. And it was a good starting point for Mayhem's world building.
