Morphine Prince 109,682
MEXICO CITY, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Saturday she ordered her economy minister to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to defend her country's interests, after the U.S. slapped across-the-board duties on goods coming from Mexico. In a lengthy post on X, Sheinbaum stressed her government does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but collaboration and dialogue. The leftist leader, who has repeatedly sought to calm tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, touted her government's record since she took office in October, seizing 20 million doses of deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl, in addition to detaining over 10,0000 individuals tied to drug trafficking. Trump said the tariffs against Mexico were due to the country's failure to stop fentanyl getting into the United States as well as what he describes as uncontrolled migration. Jill 31,812
What a great way to further unite the countries that were already coming together and challenging US hegemony after years of mistreatment, while also bringing a few more nations into the fold in the process. 4D chess. LOVEDRUG 11,269
I'm currently frustrated we in the UK aren't doing anything, be it preemptive tariffs on America or exploratory talks for some new trade agreement with the EU to supplant American imports. I know our government likely won't do anything until Trump comes for us, but I can say for a fact that people here are a hell of a lot more friendly to Canada and Mexico than they are to America. Shadow 6,697
All Trump does is toss around tariffs... 🤦♂️ Are tariffs bad for growth? Emvee 8,831
Trump is shooting North America in the foot. The US cannot maintain competitiveness without Canada and Mexico. But the reality is that Trump and the other oligarchs don’t really care about future American prospects - especially not Elon. Most of his business interests ARE IN CHINA. I’m surprised more people aren’t connecting this to their so-called ERS idea to collect the tariff money. Guess who is most likely to steal all that money for themselves? It’s just another sleazy wealth transfer from the middle class to make the rich richer. They have made it clear that migration and fentanyl are just a fabricated excuse to wage this trade war. It was never really an issue with Canada and, in Mexico’s case, the current and previous Morena administrations were already collaborating with the US on mitigating migration and fentanyl production. I really hope Canada goes through with a 100% tariff against Tesla and Europe should follow. Elon Musk needs to be reined in now before it’s too late. Mexico’s in a different position though. Sheinbaum’s administration seems to be keeping details under wraps, but it’s likely centered around domestic state and private-backed manufacturing and/or pivoting toward Europe. There have been talks about the manufacturing of a domestic EV, so hopefully that comes to fruition before Musk targets it. As we’ve seen Elon Musk is responsible for stopping other transportation initiatives in the past to serve his own interests.
