This is usually a problem for female artists in particular though. Men can repeat the same formula countless times. 

Also in her specific case, it was switching away from the doo wap inspiration that hurt her sophomore release. She went for a more typical 2016 radio pop and it got lost. I'm pretty sure she only recently went back to her debut sound.
