BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that he was ordering 25% tariffs, visa restrictions and other retaliatory measures to be taken against Colombia after its government rejected two flights carrying migrants.

Trump said the measures were necessary, because the decision of Colombian President Gustavo Petro “jeopardized” national security in the U.S.

“These measures are just the beginning,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States.”

Earlier Sunday, Petro said that his government won’t accept flights carrying migrants deported from the U.S. until the Trump administration creates a protocol that treats them with “dignity.” Petro made the announcement in two X posts, one of which included a news video of migrants reportedly deported to Brazil walking on a tarmac with restraints on their hands and feet.

“A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves,” Petro said. “That is why I returned the U.S. military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.”

Immigrants are generally given respect in the US by most people aside from fringe racists and the government when conservatives are in charge.

Those poor people, tossed around and caught in the middle. I applaud any government standing up to Trump, but for the people actually on those planes, I don't think they were done any favours here.

It’s the fact that the US didn’t even coordinate these deportations with the countries they were sending them to. Mexico also denied their military aircrafts from landing because the hadn’t even coordinated it beforehand. 
 

And notice how he is trying to demonize him by calling him a “socialist” president. Completely unhinged.  
 

The United States is gaining the ire of the rest of the world right now and it’s totally warranted. There’s no region in the world that Trump isn’t antagonizing right now.

Colombia just imposed 25% tariffs on US imports.

Welp, here comes the first trade war of the Trump presidency. 

Colombia is responding to the US tariffs but this will be bad for the Colombian consumer. They're going to have to start buying non-US products as the US is Colombia's largest trading partner. 

This will probably push Colombia to expand its trade with China and others.

This is absurd from Trump. He wants to deport a load of illegal immigrants. Ok, he has the right to do that, but deporting people means transporting them to another country, so that country has to be consulted and a process worked out, and that's doable, it just takes a realistic attitude and some work. But that's beyond him apparently. Now he's looking at a possible trade war with Colombia. He's crap at this. The BIG man, he's crap at his job.

I totally get wanting to deport ppl that shouldnt be there (especially if they are legit criminals and not just Trump saying).

 

But there is a process for doing so. You dont just show up on another Countries soil with military war craft and be like we got these ppl we gotta dump back to you

 

Theres proper channels and an appropriate way to do things. The US (and certainly not Trump) would not take it kindly either if another Nation just showed up with military stuff to deliver people without some kind of proper warning first.

 

PS: on tarrifs, I think Columbia is kind of simmilar to Canada... unlike China and Mexico that sell a lot of manufactured goods to US cheaper than US can produce but technically can be onshored (at a higher price)... Columbia sells a lot of stuff to the US primarily of critical nature. There is a lot of produce that does not easily grow in the US and the US needs to import it. Tarrifs wont change that

 

Canada is in the same boat. Our biggest exports are Oil, Gas and critical minerals other resources. Some the US has very little of and others it has in abundance but still not enough for their huge population and economy and needs it. Tarrifs on those things wont help the US especially since the US has a trade Surplus with Canada on manufacturing and retalitory tarrifs on those will hurt US manufacturing. 

 

Like wise retaliatory tarrifs will hurt Canada because a lot of what we import from the US is also critical and we cant replace ourselves. We buy a lot of food especially produce because our climate doesnt allow us to grow anything for half the year. No local industries can replace that

 

We also import a lot of specialized machinery from the US we simply dont have an existing indystry to replace with

 

Trade hurts everyone and Trump is too stupid to understand. The tarrifs on Columbia will only hurt American families at the grocery store and it wont help US jobs because the stuff they sell America is not replaceable with a domestic industry as most of your climate is not ideal. Even places like Florida is not truly tropical. You can grow oranges but some stuff like avocadoes and bananas tho technically possible wont grow as effortlessly and will cost a lot more in a less perfect climate

It’s in Latin America’s best interest to keep cool heads right now but definitely start working towards a intra-regional trade block that doesn’t rely on the US and potentially focuses on expanding trade relationships with the EU, UK, and Canada. All countries that are feeling high and dry right now. 

The whole issue of migration is heavily caused by poverty and corruption, particularly in Central America and the Caribbean - both regions with a history of American meddling. And although Venezuela has its own problems, US sanctions do not help the situation at all. Tariffs will unravel the whole region once again and exacerbate the migration issue… which fuels reactionary fervor in the US and keeps these ****ers in power. Make no mistake, MAGA doesn’t want to fix the root causes of migration. They use it to their advantage. 

If the US could just stay the **** out of Latin American internal affairs, countries like Brazil, Chile, and Mexico could finally break into developed nation status. I mean ffs, Trump’s new ambassador to Mexico is an ex-green beret known to have been involved in covert operations in El Salvador. It seems too comical to be real life, but unfortunately it is. In general, the US sees social democratic governments in LA as a threat, but with Trump in office, it gets blown way out of proportion. They are absolutely manufacturing consent for regime change.
