MAYHEM: The Official Discussion Thread (Act II) It’s MAYHEM in here 👹

A lot of this album is a grower for me, but I did really like a lot of the songs! The ones that left an impression on me from first listen are Zombieboy, Perfect Celebrity, Killah, and I really loved Blade Of Grass

In the wise words of YouTube prophet AjayII, I'm gonna need more time with this one. I was really expecting something darker from the imagery, her recent looks, and the first two singles. It was totally different than what I thought. Almost felt like a bait-n-switch. And I LOVED Disease and Abracadabra on first listen. Like, LOVVVVEED

It's not bad, just different. Every song was good. Some felt a bit generic though (please don't kill me for thinking that). Only a few had really poetic lyrics to me, even though she said one of the words to describe the album is 'poetry'.

It's a me problem though. My ADHD brain needs a really catchy hook that I can pick up immediately and know by the second chorus or it just won't latch onto a song at all. And historically most of Gaga's music has been that. Pure pop, which this is not. Don't get me wrong though.. GOOD music

I was also really surprised to hear what to me felt like influences from The Fame era, 80s' and 90's music/movie soundtrack music, and funky, disco, groovy sounds that reminded me of her mini I Want Your Love era

Edit: I did go to a wedding last night and I'm horribly hungover today so that doesn't help :laughga: maybe I was hoping for some more moody, 'weird Gaga', dark synth pop to sink into in my impaired state. Kinda wish I hadn't heard Abracadabra until today because she still reigns #1 supreme by farrr

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

The album is drenched in ‘80s New Romantic and New Wave’s funky romanticism. Vanish Into You has The Cure all over it—Head on the Door-era guitars, and as a sharp-eared forum member pointed out, the drums too! It also echoes Duran Duran. This is essentially Seven Tiger—their best and most underrated album, where they set out to mix Chic with the Sex Pistols.

Mayhem fully embraces that New Romantic/Early New Wave spirit. Even bands like ABC surface in the layers.

Then there’s Zombieboy! And Killa!—a fantastic slice of glam pop.

Bowie looms large, but it’s Scary Monsters Bowie: ost-Thin White Duke, healthy and playful, surging back to the top with an album that’s energetic, eclectic, bright, and just the right amount of camp/artsy. Her vocals shine in their full range, and the production feels alive—passionate, layered (like Scary Monsters), and organic, unlike the over-polished, inorganic sheen of much modern pop.

Mayhem’s approach to pop is deeply coded in the ‘80s.

And then there is the 90s connection… For another post!

Omg I miss Scarlet. I had to move to Seattle.
I turned 21 in there … but that was when it was Gentry before that.

Mister Gaga

Taking into consideration that Gaga is all we know she is (actress, pop jazz rock country edm singer), this is the most Gaga album out of all. It encapsulates, in various ways, everything Gaga is.
