Canada to US: You will be paying a Trump tariff tax, warns of retaliation

TORONTO (AP) — Canada’s foreign minister on Friday warned Americans they will be paying a “Trump tariff tax” if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with a threat to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods.

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said that Canada is ready to retaliate and put maximum pressure on the United States.

“If we need to retaliate we will do so. And Americans will discover Trump’s tariff tax,” Joly said after meeting with U.S. senators in Washington.

Trump has threatened to impose sweeping 25% tariffs on Canada as well as on Mexico and other trading partners, creating a sense of uncertainty about whether this is simply a negotiating ploy or a massive restructuring of U.S. foreign relations.

Despite Trump’s claim that the U.S. doesn’t need Canada, a quarter of the oil America consumes per day is from Canada.

The U.S. and Canadian economies are highly integrated. In the auto sector alone parts can go back and forth across the Canada-U.S. border several times before being fully assembled in Ontario or Michigan.

“These tariffs will hurt the North American auto industry and endanger American jobs as well,” outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

Joly said Americans are not really aware of how essential Canada is with respect to foreign trade.

Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US $2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day.

Canada is looking at putting retaliatory tariffs on American orange juice, toilets and some steel products if Trump follows through with his threat.

I also think if Canada chooses to go hard, we more than any other Nation can impose real damage and pressure on US

 

Of the major Nations the US trades with Canada is the only one that buys nearly as much from the US as it sells to it so retaliation has a bigger impact than say if China retaliates.

 

Canada also buys more manufactured goods from USA and other complete products than it sells. Meanwhile what Canada does sell to the US in large quantities is of critical nature like Oil, Gas, Critical minerals, Produce etc, not factory walmart products you can easily shift back to US soil. So when it comes to what were trading back and fourth the notion that US can onshore more jobs to the US is completely false. Canada buys more manufactured goods from than US than US does from Canada so protectionism there is a net loss for USA. Meanwhile cutting imports where Canada has a surplus on in natural resources wont help factory jobs or manufacturing, it will actually worsen it by raising cost of rae materials.

 

Of course Canada will seriously suffer as well. But Trump genuinely seems to think trade is a binary win or loose situation. He will find with Canada it makes no sense whats so ever to go into war with and that its damaging
