Cavadour 2,099 Posted January 23 Share Posted January 23 Bram Stoker classic novel. I love it. Dracula, Mina, Van Helsing, Renfield... They were all present, under other names, in that last attempt to renew the story visually. There must be an urge for directors in love with gothic horror to create their own movie version. Something like doing an essay on a widely know subject, trying to put a new and original angle to it. Impossible though, when you already saw the previous attemps to watch Egger's movie without getting a stong sense of dejĂ -vu ! What I liked : Â - The 1,66:1 format, aka 16:9+, adding an old b&w movie feel - The look of the vampire, his face inspired by portraits of Vlad Tepes - Scenes in the woods en route to Orlok's castle - The lighting, the costumes, the sets - Lily-Rose magnetic face and Willem Dafoe performance - The more visceral and macabre path to horror, with addition of nudity, necrophilia What I disliked : - The overused shadow silhouette of Olok and his bad finger extensions everywhere - I missed the pathetic approach of Kinski's character and the romantism of Herzog movie - I missed the sheer scare I felt watching Max Schreck performance for the first time - I missed the far superior onirism of Murnau movie - To me this whole new movie felt like a soulless exercice in style Finally, Shadow of the Vampire (2000), with Willem Dafoe, John Malkovitch and Udo Kier was the last time a movie linked to the same story drew my attention.
