Jay-Z wanted Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame renamed, called rock “dead”

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Chairman John Sykes revealed that Jay-Z previously suggested renaming the annual ceremony to the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.

Speaking to Vulture, the exec shared that Jay-Z once expressed his skepticism about the RRHOF’s connection to hip-hop, stating, “Rock is dead. It should be called the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.” Sykes responded that “hip-hop is rock and roll,” and while the rapper disagreed, the exec explained that they needed “to do a better job explaining it,” continuing, “Little Richard, Otis Redding, Chuck Berry — these artists were the cornerstones of rock and roll. If you look at the sounds over the years, those artists ended up influencing hip-hop.” Jay-Z eventually did attend the Hall of Fame ceremony for his induction in 2021.

I mean, yes, rock is dead. When is the last time we had a new artist who was commercially successful with ROCK music. Rock music is very indie and less popular these days. Hip hop, however is very very popular currently.

THAT BEING SAID- the hall of fame should be inclusive of all genres- not just rock and not just hip hop.

so yeah they could rename it but it should just be MUSICAL HALL OF FAME or something broad

Yeah rock and roll is more a phrase than a genre here. It’s more like “legendary boss musicians” haha

DWAS is literally a soft rock song and it's about to be #1  

Rock is FAR from dead. If anything's dead it's real hip-hop. Rap and trap are evolutions of it but have taken over from traditional hip-hop.

True BUT new artists are seeming to be less successful when they make rock music.

people who’ve been in the industry can pull off rock- but it seems like to get a big hit , it has to be TikTok genre safe (which is rarely ever rock)
