I used to do a worst music list as well but it all got too much and now I just like to listen to music I enjoy. I'm not a professional critic, I just enjoy listening to music for fun and listing/categorising is a big thing for me. So, I've got the same categories that I've been doing for a few years now - along with the best singles and albums, I've also got best album tracks, best album artworks and more. I've also introduced Best Collaboration this year as well as it was a notable absence that my list was crying out for. The only rules are, it has to be original music (so Harlequin doesn't qualify unless it's a new song on it, sorry), it must be an official single to be nominated under best single, best collab is only for the people on the song who are actually singing (producer credits don't count) and what I'm most strict about: it has to have been released this calendar year from January 1st 2024 to December 31st 2024 (so Chappell Roan's album isn't eligible as it was released in 2023, it doesn't matter if someone blew up a year later). Oh, and unlike the Grammys, New Artist really does mean new artist. If you've made material for years and it just hasn't been successful until now you're not new (so, Sabrina Carpenter doesn't qualify). Some categories will be longer to reflect the volume of interest. I will say it was a great year for singles as I had to make many cuts to make a top 40, a bad year for albums with me having to import some albums that got less than a passable grade to make a top 20 and a phenomenal year for album tracks with a good few coming from albums I wouldn't otherwise put on my best of list. Even if you don't agree with all my picks, I hope you can feel my passion for music through them. I hope my list inspires you to check out these artists, especially the ones you haven't heard of (there were a few I hadn't heard of either until recently!), so without further ado, here's my annual review of the best music of the year, in my opinion, with a lot of spoilers because this is long.
