They didn’t specify which America, what if it’s #1 in Central America? :ladyhaha:

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

It is actually the #1 and the chart they link to will show that when actuals come out tomorrow or Tuesday,

The trades have all reported as such, but the actual box office trackers don’t physically update until Monday or Tuesday because they want to use the real numbers, not projections. We’ve known it will be this week’s #1 since Friday night when the trades posted the projections for the 5-day holiday weekend.

This ad was made in response to that, and is just running before the trackers like Box Office Mojo do their weekend update once the week begins.

Mufasa is looking at $60+ million this week whereas Sonic is closer to $58 million.

They’re telling the truth, it’s just that whoever made the community note clearly doesn’t know how these things work.

Exactly. It's the crazy Sonic stans on Twitter that are upset and are trying to discredit Mufasa. They've been doing this for weeks now.

This is the second time Disney gets a community note for lying about Mufasa doing better than Sonic 3 lmao

I’m just so happy Sonic did so well especially up against a Disney movie lmao

So I think this is not only about Sonic fans, but also anti-Disney people who direct their anger just towards Disney but not also to the larger whole.

Make no mistake, I would never defend a multi-billion-dollar multinational company at any point, but I have noticed that, quite often on social media, many people tend to go overboard in their outrage about certain things. Disney responded to the market and acted unscrupulously, just like any other for-profit company would. But people on social media complain that they're only producing remakes and seeking to earn more money. Color me shocked! However, they fail to realize that this isn't the root of the problem. It's not that we're living in a unique era devoid of all originality. It is that the commodification of going to the movies, and of what society deems acceptable in a movie, changed so drastically that now the safest bet is to repeat what has already been done.

Many people are angry at Mufasa for its apparent lack of originality, and there's some truth to that. But these people are directing their anger at Disney instead of at the larger issue within the film industry and, more broadly, capitalism itself, which is always about betting on whatever is safest if it yields higher returns than anything else. That's simply how it works. Yet many people seem to doubt it and want to prove that the "big, evil corporation" doesn't always get its way. However, most of the time, that's not how it goes either.

These people would do well to learn about how not only the box office operates, but how capitalism in general functions, so that their complaints can be more deeply rooted and directed at the real problem. The issue isn't a lack of originality, or the supposed "ugliness" of the product, or even the exploitation of VFX artists (which are generally arguments constructed from abstract vibes), but rather the entire film industry and the market as a whole. This isn't solved by supporting a competing film like Sonic 3, but through other, more productive means.

In the end, they remain stuck in the same cycle over and over again.

"Based on estimates, “Sonic 3” was ever-so-slightly ahead during the traditional weekend ($38 million between Friday and Sunday; $59.8 million from 3,769 venues since Christmas Day on Wednesday) while “Mufasa” claimed No. 1 over the five-day stretch ($37.1 million between Friday and Sunday; $63.9 million from 4,100 theaters since Wednesday). Either way, both “Mufasa” and “Sonic 3” had plenty to celebrate over the Yuletide frame."

I just saw Mufasa. I enjoyed it and it made me cry a few times.

The general social media narrative is that “this movie is unnecessary” or the tired old “who asked for this?” Those haters say the same thing for everything as soon as the first trailer or even first announcement drops. Looking at the critics on RT it seems to be the same thing, as if they stubbornly went in to review this with this bias already set in “Disney remakes are unimaginative.” Movies are a way to escape so why go in tense, just relax and try and enjoy yourself.

It does have similar tropes found in other films but what doesn’t? It was overall a good visually appealing film with some good action and cute lion cubs.

Like I said, it isn’t a lie. Sonic’s lead began to shrink massively after opening weekend because the franchise is primarily fan driven. Day to day they’re performing comparably with Mufasa often winning the day (such as Christmas).

That is not to say Sonic isn’t doing well! It is. But it’s not curb stomping the competition like opening weekend suggested. It’s showing now that it’s weekly legs are going to be a little weaker than Mufasa’s because it had the upper hand opening weekend, but not in the long range.

It’s an impressive run for Sonic, and I’m happy for all involved as they clearly care about the product. I didn’t adore Mufasa (it’s good not great), but when all is said and done it will absolutely be the winner of the box office final totals.

Domestically it could go to either one of them, but worldwide total will absolutely go to Mufasa. Sonic’s international numbers are poor (we knew they would be) with weak legs.

Mufasa is currently tracking to finish with $650+ million WW and Sonic is tracking to finish $450+ million or so.

It remains to be seen who’ll take the domestic crown as their daily gap is small and they swap places a lot. Mufasa is winning dailies at the moment (on Christmas Day especially it made quite a bit more than Sonic), but the holidays being done may slow it down some. Sonic’s domestic total is currently $136 million vs. Mufasa’s $113 million, so the gap isn’t very large and could swing either way. At the moment I’m leaning toward a photo finish for Mufasa on top if current box office tracking models hold.

Worldwide, Mufasa leads over Sonic by over $100 million so that gap is going to be impossible for Sonic to close.

Idk why reading this was so hilarious. I just feel like being a "sonic stan" would be wild.
