His father Pierre Trudeau served longer. He was one of the few exeptions. He served 15 non consecutive years 

 

11 years from 1968 to 1979

Another 4-5 years from 1980 to 1984

 

Im guessing when he lost in 1979 the winning Government must of been a very small minority goverment and it triggered an election really early

 

The way it works here, a majority Government (which is often hard to get as we have 3 relevant parties) guarantees u 5 years in office, but with a minority government all kinds of politics like a vote of non confidence from Opposition can trigger an early election (they call it a snap election in the UK I believe)

 

This is what the NDP promised to do to get Trudeau out soon which means Liberals are unlikely to last till October when the next election was due

 

Minority Governments can be a real pain cuz everything gets blocked from being done and passed and you sometimes have elections every 2 years or less Trudeau lasted a long time in a minority Government this election cycle cuz NDP kept them in power with coalition because they knew an election just means Conservaties will win according to polls but now their hand is being forced cuz everyone is hating on NDP for keeping the Liberals alove and its obvious they are doing it to keep themselves in power also
