Docs give women in labor drugs then report them

Across the country, hospitals are dispensing medications to patients in labor, only to report them to child welfare authorities when they or their newborns test positive for those very same substances on subsequent drug tests, an investigation by The Marshall Project and Reveal has found.

The positive tests are triggered by medications routinely prescribed to millions of birthing patients in the U.S. every year. The drugs include morphine or fentanyl for epidurals or other pain relief, anxiety medications, and two different blood pressure meds prescribed for C-sections.

In a time of increasing surveillance and criminalization of pregnant women since the end of Roe v. Wade, the hospital reports have prompted calls to the police, child welfare investigations and even the removal of children from their parents.

In New York, a mother with no history of drug use lost custody of her toddler and newborn for five months after she tested positive for fentanyl that the hospital had given her in her epidural. In Oklahoma, when a mother tested positive for meth, sheriff’s deputies removed her newborn and three other children. They were held in foster care for 11 days, until a confirmation test proved that the culprit was a heartburn medication the hospital had given the patient.

Women are not only NOT allowed to make decisions about their own uterus, now they risk losing their children and being charged as drug users if the hospital delivers pain medication during labor.

Well this is scary. Fentanyl is used a lot in labor. What's hard is I don't even knkow all the meds they gave me during my c section, so imagine being blindsided by this and then not even knowing how to advocate for yourself. Heartburn meds showing as meth is wild.

Imagine how that first woman felt holding her still born baby just for them to come in and say she's being reported for drug abuse 'cause they found drugs in the baby's system.

That's in Texas. Lord knows they could use that to pin a murder charge on her.

Some of the medications mentioned aren't even opioids though. Depending on the situation, they can be used safely, but usually not iin the third trimester. I was offered them for my migraines but I hate the way they make me feel. Fentanyl isn't an opioid and one of the main medications used in epidurals.

Omph, I feel this. We have 8 remaining embryos. Who knows what we will be required to do with them under Trump. Plus, I am terrified to get pregnant again and not be able to access the healthcare that I may need if something goes wrong.

The last time I went to the doctor for pain I was prescribed Tramadol and I swear Tylenol did more to alleviate the symptoms

I can't imagine getting that for childbirth, which is notoriously one of the most painful things a human being can experience
