JUST IN: President Yoon says he will lift martial law order

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has said he will lift his martial law order following the parliamentary vote to block it.

Lawmakers in South Korea have voted to block the martial law decree announced by President Yoon Suk Yeol.

One-hundred ninety lawmakers in the 300-seat national assembly voted to overturn the measure.

It’s unclear what effect the vote will have on the martial law declaration. Under South Korean law, the president is obliged to comply with the vote.

I mean...at this point its so hard to see what is going to happen over the next 24 hours. 

The President is supposedly supported by the Police, the military isn't neccessarily locked in but generally support his party. 

The police have been stopping the public getting too close to the assembley, but not stopped lawmakers entering. 
The special forces are reportedly in the assembley, but again not interfered. 
Both the President's party & the opposition majority in the assembley oppose this. 
So is this about to be a major failure by Yoon to survive and instead accelerate his demise as President? Because, it seems like *no one* is actually backing him

Yeah its hard to see which endgame is likely here. The president is super unpopular so the public are probably going to generally be opposed to it. The National Assembly is against it (190 members in attendance– 190 votes to overturn)...

Sadly will depend on whoever the military decides to support (like you my gut says they'll back the president for now). 

But also like you say... this surely can't last forever and is just prolonging the inevitable decline of his presidency but basically guaranteeing prison at the end of it

I think the fact his party (which is generally the party supported by the military leadership) has unanimously opposed him on this is a pretty safe indicator that the military will back the assembley over the President on this occasion. Yoon is also not military, the previous Korean dictators were. 

A coup like this relies on solidifying its power within the first 24 hours. We're about 2/3 hours in at this point and so far the Police aren't enforcing the martial law, the military isn't controlling the assembley (potentially seems to be protecting them), the assembley has thrown out the martial law and civilians have freedom on the streets of Seoul to protest and chant for the President to be arrested. Can't see a civilian president with minimal political experience successfully turning this around

So he didn't actually claim they were being invaded. He was actually just saying the opposition were working with North Korea to oppose him (and by oppose he meant investigate the corruption he's linked to)

Yeah the game's up now. Any further attempts by him to push back against this will be unconstitutional. He's almost certainly a goner. Quite frankly, thank god he tried this, because otherwise it was going to be a painful and laborious process to get him gone for all of his other misgivings.

Yeah I think this is a coup detat attempt. At first I thought this was preparation for war with North Korea, but it seems like a self coup attempt. The videos of it are wild. Helicopters and military vehicles are moving around.

Yeah I've honestly lost a lot of hope for the world regarding the alt-right. At this point the world needs a revolutions of 1848/Arab Spring to happen that shocks the alt-right into backing down.

We're definitely reaching that point.

I'd just ideally like us to do it before we let the alt-right, new right, nazis that **** less or w/e they call themselves have a chance to cause serious damage.
