UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States on Wednesday vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in the war in Gaza because it was not linked to an immediate release of hostages taken captive by Hamas militants in Israel in October 2023.

The council voted overwhelmingly in favor of the resolution — 14 of its 15 members voted “yes” including U.S. allies Britain and France — but it was doomed by the veto.

U.S. deputy ambassador Robert Wood said the United States worked for weeks to avoid a veto of the resolution sponsored by the council’s 10 elected members, and expressed regret that compromise language was not accepted.

“We made clear throughout negotiations we could not support an unconditional cease-fire that failed to release the hostages,” he said. “Hamas would have seen it as a vindication of its cynical strategy to hope and pray the international community forgets about the fate of more than 100 hostages from more than 20 member states who have been held for 410 days.”

The resolution that was put to a vote “demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent cease-fire to be respected by all parties, and further reiterates its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”

It's true, Israel will indeed ignore any and all UN resolutions and still commit genocide and war crime after war crime in multiple countries with full impunity from the world

Be respectful please. Some people you're speaking to on this forum have had to evacuate their homes due to Israel's attacks. The least you can do is be kind.

OT: I mean, even if the US had signed with them both Israel and Hamas are hellbent on mutual destruction at this point. Gaza will be wiped out, I'm sure of it. I just hope as many people as possible can flee and find homes somewhere safe.

Some people on this forums have been evacuated from their homes due to Hazbullah attacks (the terror organization that rules Lebanon) and I don’t see no empathy for them, talking about “respectful”, the individual Ive been talking to praised a leader of terror organization that was responsible for many many civilians deaths and I did not see any demand for respect from him right?

People are not comprised solely of the political state of their country. Certain people here have yet to even know a life without Israeli bombs being dropped within ear shot and planes overhead.

Just treat others like human beings or get off this site idc anymore. I'm tired of babysitting and resolving ridiculous conflicts.
