He was so supportive of the gay community (like, an active member of the GSA clubs in high school, advocating for gay marriage, etc.) and I had zero idea he was transphobic. I asked him why and he said that trans people aren't real, that they’re brainwashed into thinking they’re trans by the democrats, etc. it was so heartbreaking. He said that’s why he’s so happy Trump won, to “put a stop” to it. Had a similar conversation with a high-school classmates who was the most femine boy in class back then and his answer was "using taxpayers money to fund transgender surgeries for inmates"

StrawberryBlond 15,564
If you want a positive spin on this day...at least this will be Trump's final term. After this, he will never have the chance to run again. Sure, it wouldn't surprise me if he tried to pass a law that a candidate can have infinite terms but it won't fly. And even if he got any of his sons to run after him, they won't have the same cult of personality around them. In 2028, MAGA fever will end, never to return. There won't be another one like Trump for a long, long time. That's one thing to be thankful for. To be honest, Kamala was hardly the issue. I don't think anyone could have won against him. His supporters are so brainwashed and cult-like at this point that he could kill someone live on-air and they would find a way to validate it. You literally can't win against that. Having heard from Trump voters as to why they did so, not to mention, hearing from undecided voters who eventually vouched for Trump, I think it's clear that going forward, the Democrat party needs a major makeover. Change approach. Focus more on leading with policies, not simply "the other candidate is bad and I'm not them." Don't be a single issue candidate. Get down on the streets and talk to everyone. Don't insult the other side. Don't try to be morally superior (even if you know you are). Let's face it, Kamala did extremely well for a candidate who didn't work her way up through primaries and debates. But because she didn't start from the ground up, she was never going to gain enough respect in such a short space of time, not enough to go up against Trump's ardent supporters who had been on his side for 8 years. I started to wonder over the last couple of days if it could be possible but my initial gut feeling was right. Add in the fact she was a woman and it was even more unlikely. Pretty sad that the only time Trump's lost is when it was to a man, so the US still isn't ready for a female president. Let's just be glad she got to be vice and almost got there. Progress is being made. And if anything goes bad under Trump's rule, unlike the last 4 years, liberals don't have to take any heat for it. I'm by no means wishing the whole country goes down the tubes (regardless of how they voted, I still don't believe Americans deserve that) but if anything negative does happen, we can give his voters hell and they can hang their heads in shame. And with a gap of Democrat leaders, that opens up the door for a far more likely Democrat presidency next time. So, good luck in these 4 years. Just remember: you did it once, you can do it again. Fight the good fight.

On the whole, I think Democrats really need to evaluate themselves and understand why they aren't more popular. Unfortunately, I think many people believe Democrats are occupied with wealthy elites who aren't relatable to the common man—even though that is literally what the Republican Party is composed of now. Dems need to rethink how they approach policies and the rhetoric around them. They also need to learn to pick better candidates who can share a populist message similar to Trump's. Bernie was the start of that, but unfortunately, he was pushed out by many centrist Dems in favor of Hillary and Biden. The part I mainly disagree with is saying that "In 2028, MAGA fever will end, never to return." I couldn't disagree more. Trump's win has only energized his base and the Republican Party is forever changed. It took a hard right turn when he won the first time, but after this, there is no turning back. The modern-day Republican Party IS the Trump party, and even when he eventually leaves office, his influence will reign over the party for a very, very long time. Trump is only a politician, but one person alone couldn't have done everything Trump did. It's very individualistic to think otherwise. There's an entire apparatus behind him, a whole spirit of the times, a fierce behind-the-scenes struggle that none of you are taking into account. Trump could have died in his assassination attempt, but do you believe that would be the end of his movement, his way of thinking, his way of doing things? Do you think that he, and only he, is the sole reason why the United States is in its current state? Do you believe that those opposing Trump are any better than him, that Trump was merely a historical accident, a mistake that should never have happened? One needs to read a bit of history. It's well known that people like Trump are anything but a historical mistake. Trump may not run again. His branch of the Republican Party might fade. But the conditions that brought him to power, and all the support he receives from the most powerful sectors of the economy, will still be there. And so will his clash with the Democratic Party elites. What is happening in the United States now is the fault of the United States and no one else. Former First Lady of the United States. The modern-day Republican Party IS the Trump party, and even when he eventually leaves office, his influence will reign over the party for a very, very long time. So, basically, you don't agree with any of it? It's best to listen to what actual Trump voters claim. You have to get into the minds of the opposition to truly get it, which is a thing a lot of liberals refuse to do. Liberals used to like debating their opposition back in the day, now if someone disagrees with them, they don't want to give them the time of day. Engaging with the opposition to find out what truly makes them tick is the only route to understanding and finding out how we can all get along better. I agree with your assertion that they need to find someone who's truly a hero of the people to garner more than voters but a fanbase. It's about a lot more than just policy. Less putting down of the other side is crucial as well. For too long Democrat candidates have insulted Republican voters, which probably makes them vote red all the more. People who vote Republican for economical reasons in particular will not like to be called close-minded Nazis. If you want to be a president of the people, even those who voted against you, you can't be name calling the public who are voting in way that they think will improve their lives. Not saying his influence won't still be felt but it has to be Donald J. Trump specifically for the cult to truly embrace the Republican candidate. MAGA is Trump's thing specifically. That phrase won't be trotted out for the next Republican candidates. Trump was a moment in time and people will move on. Maybe I'm just a dreamer, but I think that believing that Trump's presence will never truly go away gives him far too much credit and power. 37 minutes ago, Jill said: I'm truly surprised by the shallow analysis many of you make of this situation (no offense intended), because Trump is not just Trump. When you get too afraid of your enemies, you give them power over you. Any ex-president that had ardent supporters moved on and some of them even realised that their one-time fave isn't even all that good (kinda like how a lot of Democrats view Obama now). The public are fickle and when someone is no longer constantly around, they do move on. If we approach all this with the belief that bad things will happen, they will. Like I said, if it was survivable before, it's possible again. We're more resilient than we think.

Maybe I'm just a dreamer, but I think that believing that Trump's presence will never truly go away gives him far too much credit and power. I don't know how you read my comment and extrapolated that... You're talking about how Democrats need to have a "major makeover," and I agree with you. Dems need to understand that they can't take voters for granted and they must work harder to come up with the necessarily policies to get their messages across effectively. That's why someone like Bernie was so great; he had a populist agenda and character that many found relatable and refreshing. That being said, I don't understand why the onus is always on the Dems to stop "putting down" the other side. Trump and MAGA's rhetoric has only gotten more volatile over time and he won! Not only the Electoral College but the popular vote for the first time! They consistently spew out hateful, bigoted language and Dems are constantly in the position of "Well, stop being mean to them because we need their moderate/centrist votes!" It's frankly bullsh*t. To your last paragraph though...the "Make America Great Again" phrase was literally used and embraced by Ronald Reagan. It isn't even specific to Trump. And I'm sorry, but you are incredibly naive to think the movement will stop with Trump. It may eventually die down, but not for a long time. The Republicans of yesteryear are the minority now. The Republican Party IS Trump's party and he will only surround himself with people who are willing to do his bidding. What happens after he's gone? Those people who surrounded him are now indebted to the movement. You think JD Vance is going to back to calling Trump "America's Hitler" after he finishes this term? You think people like Mitch McConnell, MTG, and Mike Johnson will denounce Trump after he's gone? You think those in the Trump cult will magically see the light and the error of their ways after he's spent 8 years in the Oval Office and a total 13 years in the public eye as a politician? You are a dreamer if you believe any of that to be true. 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔪𝔬𝔫𝔰𝔱𝔢𝔯 𝔱𝔬𝔯𝔢 𝔞𝔴𝔞𝔶 𝔦𝔱𝔰 𝔪𝔞𝔰𝔨 𝔞𝔫𝔡...𝔦𝔱𝔰 𝔣𝔞𝔠𝔢 𝔴𝔞𝔰 𝔪𝔦𝔫𝔢.
