Starbucks USA Will Stop Charging Extra For Milk Substitute Starting Nov 7th

On Oct. 30, Starbucks announced it will no longer charge extra for nondairy milk along with the launch of its holiday menu on Nov. 7. The change, which will go into effect at company-owned and operated stores in the U.S. and Canada, comes after years of complaints from vegan and lactose-intolerant customers.

The second most requested customization from Starbucks customers — behind adding a shot of espresso — is substituting nondairy milk in their drinks. Starbucks says almost half of its current customers in the U.S. at its company-operated stores who pay to modify their beverage will pay 10% less for their drink.

North American Starbucks are not the first to eliminate the nondairy milk upcharge: Locations in the United Kingdom scrapped it in 2022 and were joined by those in Germany and France by 2023.

“Core to the Starbucks Experience is the ability to customize your beverage to make it yours. By removing the extra charge for non-dairy milks we’re embracing all the ways our customers enjoy their Starbucks,” said Brian Niccol, Starbucks’ newly-appointed chairman and CEO, said in a press release.

They already run out of oatmilk every day as it is this is going to cause all people who read this and got excited (like me!) about no extra charge for oatmilk to rush to their stores nationwide!!! The oatmilk is not safe!!

this should be a rule at all coffee shops, is not really that hard and in many cases the election of milk comes from a health point of view and not a personal choice

Are milk alternatives more expensive? If so, i cant blame them if they charged more before for it tho if they wanna eliminate the extra charge anyway, awesome.

 

Genuinely asking tho cuz milk costs more in Canada than in the US due to our supply management system (that is hated by many) but I dont think oat milk or soy milk is part of supply management which may explain why here it doesnt seem significantly more expensive?

Yes. Soy milk, almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk etc are all more expensive than cow milk in the US. It always made sense for them to cost more at Starbucks but they are desperate because their sales have declined.

Fair enough.

 

Definitely its still more expensive here too than normal cow milk but i think the gap may be narrower than in the US (because of our inflated dairy costs while soy and oat shouldnt be a big difference)

I don't drink coffee but can we use this as a springboard for challenging food prices?

Why is it when I wanna add something to a dish it costs money but when I ask for the dish without something they don't take money off?  

I pull into the Taco Bell drive through and get a cute lil 5-layer burrito. Now if I asked for extra sour cream I'd be paying $0.90 more for my burrito but I ask for no sour cream ('cause sour cream is disgusting) and the price stays the same

The argument was more that people should be encouraged to swap out milk instead of dissuaded.

In an ideal world, you would pay an upcharge for cow's milk because, y'know, it is an entirely unethical product that even outweighs meat in terms of systematic animal abuse.

I’ve been working on and off as a barista since 2016 in Berlin and I think the last time I saw a regular coffee shop charge extra for non dairy was in 2017. Of course if you wanna go fancy with some buckwheat-coconut-almond stuff you’ll still pay extra, but soy and oat is always free of charge 😅 don’t know about Starbucks, never been there in my life and quite happy they never really took of here from what I hear.
