The temporary foreign worker program is rife with exploitation, and the international student situation has been out of control. It's bad for Canadians but also bad for these people who are being jerked around and used and abused. This country is kind of a hot mess and I honestly don't know if it will get any better in my lifetime

I can never remember all the Canadian members and we have so many And yes, Quebec could be a loophole but even so... temporary residents surged so much, i dont think forecast population decline from expiring visas is as farfetched as it sounds Weve never slammed the brakes on immigration so fast before and birth rates are at an alltime low of 1.2 children per woman. That said we will see. A decline of 0.2% is very tiny and margin for error in forecasts could be bigger than that I really do believe Canada will have 50 million inhabitants in a few decades. Canada and Australia won't stop increasing. They are in an every-increasing population-plus loophole. only some provinces will. maybe atlantic canada Your boyfriend comes over with a bit of gun oil Says he wants to step on new soil
AMENiCURE 9,381
I plan to immigrate in near future myself due to being from a country that persecutes LGBTQ+ individuals but as an outsider I feel the immigration system and policies were quite flawed for both Canada and Europe. Extremely aggressive, exploitative and it honestly feels like they let anyone in. Maybe I have a narrow mindset because I am obviously not experiencing things first hand and never really thought much into it, but I just hate seeing how many of people I'm trying to run away from literally running to settle in countries that are my options. As for economical reasons, I think Canada really should've prepared well for this before trying to expand. Doing all this now might just even hurt the economy more due to such a sudden de-growth. They cannot stop people from illegally arriving and they can can come en masse and overwhelm the police deportation system. And the police is limited in power to bring people back. Like, for example, if you are persecuted, a judge would most likely decide that you can stay in Canada and not be sent back if you came illegally or legally. So if you want to come to Canada, come to Canada. I invite you The reverse immigration plan is just a show to "calm Canadians" and makem them beleive things will changes, just as Law 101 was amended in Québec to make people believe that French will be protected but there are so many loopholes that French is doomed and has no future in Montréal Your boyfriend comes over with a bit of gun oil Says he wants to step on new soil

Once there arent as many temporary visas to expire in mass, population growth would resume in 2027, just not as agressively as in 2021, 2022 and 2023

But i had a feeling ud stumble into the thread anyway without a tag 😅 And funny u mention that, aparently 3M homes is exactly what we need to restore affordability But given were 1/9 the population of the US, thats like the US building 27M homes so a much more daunting task in relative terms We need another 1.4M homes to reach G7 average of units to population (and G7 is already unaffordable). Thats like the US being 12.6M units behind the average Thats how bad weve gotten When I see US discussions about housing being unaffordable despite the average US home price being consistently lower than Canada and Americans making slightly more money, I get sad at just how bad weve gotten

Canada with the exeption of refugees has always been selective to be highly oppurtunistic. They only want high skills, young people and student who pay high fees and subsidize our colleges. Tho if u already have family here that does help in your favour And i agree, a sudden degrowth may hit the economy hard now but they forced the situation But at least unemployment is higher now. Cutting growth suddenly last year when we were in a labor shortage still probably would have been worse than doing it now

Afaik the real issue in the US is corporate real estate freaks snatching up huge amounts of homes, basically having a collective monopoly on homes, and steadily raising the price of rent or sale to squeeze out cash. The "build 3 million homes" thing isn't just an effort to create more housing supply, it's also meant to create competition with those greedy landlords and real estate guys, forcing them to either remain stable or lower their prices. Yeah i mean this problem is decades in the making, the surge of thr last few years merely agravated it. Our housing boom started in 2001 and never really stopped. There were minor pull backs in 2009 (effects of financial crisis but orice drop only lasted 1 year), I and now in late 2022 to 2023 because of lagged effects from high interest rates but month over month they are already rising so looks like this pullback was also very short lived as well Anyway the housing shortage isnt just population growth. Theres issues with slow permit processes (which seems to be an issue in nearly every Province), strict zoning regulations etc all slowing down construction. Shortage in construction workers doesnt help. Alberta and Saskatchwean are the only 2 Provinces where home prices are somewhat more affordable despite good economies. They are highly conservative but at least the Government let construction do its thing without getting in the way so much Housing is also cheap in Eastern Provinces like PEI and Newfoundland but unlike Alberta and Saskatchewan... their economiest are sh*t where unemployment is chronically high, wages low. Many ppl are moving to Alberta now tho so prices are rising there too now. 3 years ago a detached house in Calgary was like $400K now its over $600K so it rose over 50% in 3 years. But thats still dirt cheap compared to where 3/4 of the population lives and their salaries are not lower As for the US. Yeah I been following that issue of Corporates buying up housing. Its disgusting. Here in Canada its starting too but not as advanced as in the US. I hope it doesnt become a big trend here too because since our housing shortage is worse, the effects of their bidding would be amplified even higher here What we have a lot of here is mom and pop investors for now. I see ur point and i partially agree... Our housing crisis has roots in inefficient building permit system, excessive red tape and labor shortages in Construction Healthcare strains have funding issues as a root cause However I also believe sudden rapid population growth is naturally gonna amplify these issues even if its not the only cause U mention the US but this is a totally different scope here. We took in 1.2M immigrants last year with a population of 40M vs the US taking like 1.5M annuallywith 350M ppl U take in 1.5M in proportion whar we took in is like if you took in over 13M. Its a scope so wildly different I dont think u can even begin to compare From my perspective US anti immigration is just plain xenophobia as I feel relative to your population the US actually isnt taking that many ppl in these days, not enough to affect economy that drastically to blame them for anything In Canada we grew so fast even many African Countries where ppl have 6 kids dont grow so fast. I think its fair to say that in itself can cause problems and be excessive

Regulations to protect buyers are great but builders and contractors also need freedoms. I haven't even really looked into real estate as an issue until it became one of Kamala's main issues ('cause politicians finally realized every voter brings up housing unprompted). So, she wants that federal funding and regulations like a good liberal but also wants to work with localities on zoning laws, permits, and incentives to make building those 3 million homes by 2028 an actual reality. Canada sounds like the worst of bureaucratic liberal hell with none of the benefits of progressivism Just speaking in general terms as I'm not knowledgeable enough to do otherwise I get the concepts though and I hope y'all get something functional and fast Whimsical bitch
