Scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency disease that plagued sailors and pirates centuries ago, appears to be re-emerging thanks to the rising cost of living and the popularity of weight loss surgery, a new study finds.

The physicians, from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in western Australia, report the case of a 50-something unemployed ex-smoker who complained of a painful rash on both legs that seemingly came out of nowhere.

It is a rare disease in developed nations because of the wide availability of nutritious food, and the BMJ authors said rising cost-of-living pressures might be leading to a re-emergence of the disease. Symptoms include feeling very tired and weak all the time, joint, muscle or leg pain and swollen or bleeding gums. Mild cases of scurvy are often easily treated by adding some vitamin C to your diet, such as from fresh fruit and vegetables.

To be fair the word Scurvy is satisfying to say, and honestly sounds like a compliment. Like "Damn queen, you're looking scurvy af!" could absolutely pass as gen z slang. :trollga:  Also thank you for the reminder that I should really go eat an orange.

this “disease” promo is actually insane :traumatica:

I was supposed to attend a bunch of meetings with some absolutely obnoxiously awful people at work this week, and I was dreading it. Found out today they've been rescheduled for another time and with someone else because all of the Karens came down with food poisoning. Like ugh, Gaga, her power :legend:

Yep, they ordered a bunch of oysters at a dinner after finding out the company was paying lol. They even took some home. Karma will get ya, and so will Gaga's marketing team apparently. :kara:
