Canada: PM Trudeau Facing Demands to Step Down

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing the biggest threat to his leadership since he took power in 2015… and it’s coming from his own party. 

A group of up to 30 Liberal MPs has apparently signed a letter demanding his resignation. Trudeau and his Liberals have trailed the Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre by nearly 20 points in the polls for over a year and Trudeau’s own personal approval rating is less than 30%.

It's a lose-lose-lose situation for Canadians regardless. He stays? Libs lose, Cons win, and Canadians suffer. He goes? Reshuffle with a failing party with somehow worse polling, Cons win, Canadians suffer. He opts to stay AND win by some miracle? We remain suffering.

As a very left-leaning Canadian, I cannot stand this man, just as much as I can't stand our MPS, provincial government, or any and all of the opposition. I wish Canada had stronger power checks built into the system, in addition to greater citizen representation in government as opposed to the lobbyists that have destroyed our country. PP and him are both tools for the super rich, I haven't seen a collective government so out of touch with its population in my lifetime (obviously there are more obvious cases, but we pretend to be a 1st world leading country for some reason... maybe in being sellouts).

But putting in the DPM would not fix things - she’s almost just as hated. I dont trust Libs to have the smarts to find someone completely new who’s also to the left, so idk… 

Best we can hope for is a conservative minority with this move. It’s definitely worth all the hassle for that result.

since you live in CAN may I ask why is he hated? I have no clue I only saw him on Drag Race Canada and I thought he was young and nice.

While not exhaustive, off the dome my understanding of it is: 

Several controversies stemmed from before he was PM (blackface or something) 

Performative allyship 

The cons consider him woke and the progressives think he half-asses everything

The pipeline in Western Canada and his management of it. Again, a half-assing issue

Flopped hardcore on housing, continuing the Harper administration method on it, and now has entrenched Canada's economy into an estate investing and not industry investing type  (horrible for opportunity) 

Immigration has become one of the main issues Canadians want to see change. His administration plays the biggest governmental role in it by allowing 500k individuals to come into the country a year on top of the international students, making Canada's population grow by 1mill annually (fastest in the developed world) without the infrastructure, healthcare, housing, etc, to support any of it. This would be less of an immediate issue if the system wasn't being gamed and a vast majority of these individuals not leave the country once they were here.

TFW and LMIA issues, his government took out the checks and balances to prevent corporations from exploiting a niche economic policy that stated companies could hire out of the country for specialized positions. It's exploited for literally any and every job atp that even high-school dropouts could work. This has crashed our entry-level or unskilled labor market (youth unemployment has skyrocketed, with many MANY grads not finding jobs in any sector), and many (including myself), cannot find employment even when highly educated. While they 'just' started to try and fix some of the issues, the system is so bad that the corps are just continuing to game it differently.

Continuing with immigration issues, his party and people face a lot of criticism (at least from what I can see) about the quality of people they are letting into this country. A mix of "low" quality, uneducated, potentially problematic individuals, and those who are also not doing anything for the economy besides straining our social systems. We've had a handful of cases where the ease of entry has basically had potential terrorists coming into this country and planning terror attacks, only being flagged by other country's intelligence agencies. On an additional note, fake asylum-seeking is also an issue, with people pretending to be LGBT to get citizenship since they otherwise would not qualify. Now I know there isn't a way to check for that status, nor is it ethical to deny someone, but it is part of the bigger issue of gaming the system that his government has set up. 

His ego prevents him from acknowledging the faults of his party or his own, although that extends to many of the governmental bodies in this country. The guy doesn't take criticism. 

Wsas called problematic for not acknowledging the trucker convoy issue in a level-headed way (think Canada's trump supporters doing a storm the capital lite but with trucks ruining an already congested city) by the cons. I don't agree with either side on the matter because the issue related to American political propaganda seeping into Canada

Foreign aid, people are tired of hearing billions of dollars going to foreign countries for climate support and equitable rights. Although this is an important matter, the average Canadian is dealing with so much that they don't want a single dollar going anywhere else atm. 

Canada's government also has the typical stance on the current wars going on

Cons generally have never liked him cuz he's been very pro LGBT

Cons have also managed to convince people that the carbon tax is actually a bigger deal than it is when in reality it's cents for the average consumer and mainly applies to big diesel (from my potentially wrong understanding of it). So, the opposition is running on cutting it, because it's easy to fearmonger and eliminate something that doesn't take any work, as opposed to running on fixing our housing, immigration, and job market issues that they have a hand in ruining intentionally.  

Generally, he's not really succeeded in fulfilling his running goals. Before COVID, he was generally tossed aside as unimportant. However, the post COVID mess ups in this country have made us feel like we are both drowning and on fire at the same time. Things are held together by strings.
