It may have sounded tempting to sign on but also a massive risk which in the end didn't pay off at all unfortunately. I hope she can recover from this and sign on to a better film because I truly enjoy her as an actress. This is why you have agents and a team. They're supposed to protect you from these sorts of blunders by helping you pick good roles + scripts. Although I'm pretty sure Gaga just signed on because she wanted to but this can also be a negative. I feel like she's too trusting of people who don't have her best interests at heart and I believe Todd Phillips didn't handle the character of Lee with any care at all. I still can't believe how much she was side-lined in the film. I understand the film is about Joker but when you cast THE Lady Gaga and completely underuse her...what an epic failure as a director. The vision of the film was a mess. It didn't know what it wanted to be and with that came its lackluster reception. Quite sad as the film had so much potential. I disagree about her team not having her best interests at heart. She's obviously happy with where she is and Bobby got her put in stadiums and the Super Bowl while she seems to be in a much better space now. If you're talking about Todd, then possibly. But a lot of directors really don't care much about the talent and heavily prioritize their vision. Which is what seems to have happened here. That's nothing super special about the job. She needs to go with lower budget productions ie Silver Linings etc.

RickMonster98 7,248
With its digital release maybe it will catch up moneywise? I remember reading about a movie finally starting to making money for a company after being release on streaming, despite flopping initially

You guys don’t realize the majority of comic book fans are misogynistic or incels who hate women and are always complaining about how woke Hollywood is. Singing in the movie was never going to work commercially. I think it could've if they really went for it though. If the musical sequences were made into a spectacle with a ton of visual pazzazz, I don't think people would've minded it. Joker and Harley are campy characters, so it definitely could've worked. The problem is that it felt half-assed. The problem was the story because it inherently subverts expectations. The whole plot was about how Arthur was not the Joker and that's not what people want to see. The first movie ended with Arthur finally embracing the Joker moniker, so this was a big 180 for people. Also I believe they make huge deals with platforms for exclusivity after the theatrical run which could help the movie to not represent a financial loss overall. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl2339995649/?ref_=bo_hm_rd Edited October 15 by Guillaume Hamon

Wewaited12hrs 58
Idk...I loved it. It got applause after my screening and my friend and I were talking to the people around us and we were all saying how pleasantly surprised we were that it was good. Mind you this was on Sunday so we had all been aware of the negative reception. I firmly believe that the film is excellent and its just not what people expected so everyone is jumping on this hate trian when there is far more nuance to the film. I love when a film, especially a sequel, does something unexpected, ESPECIALLY given how cookie cutter Hollywood and comic book cinema is right now. Gaga's Harley was an original take on the character and while she was a supporting role, it was so integral to the overall film. And imo it was her best performance to date. It looked incredible in 70mm IMAX too.

nATAH 42,243
no offence but how is Gaga supposed to pick "better" roles? she proved she was the perfect match for this role, it's completely out of her control what the director/producers/editors do with the material she provides she may be able to read a role on paper and say "no, this isn't me" but she can NEVER predict if her screen time is suddenly going to be chopped down to 30ish minutes or if people are going to do rewrites on the day i think when it comes to role picking, she's got to stop chasing these high risk smash or flop oscar chase roles for a while and build up a portfolio of diverse acting in lower risk projects... if she's lucky, one of them might unexpectedly smash and i also hope this whole era was a lesson to newer fans that no, not every project of hers is going to be a record breaking smash and one single flop in a sea of successes doesn't mean she's over it does make me wonder how swifties will react once taylor massively undersells though... mother, what must i do? 6
Nite 4,791
Gaga was great with what she was given, even if the movie didn't do well. The only people disagreeing with that are people who don't like her anyway. Like if you look at Reddit, it's the same accounts who seem to spend their entire days screaming about Gaga in her own unmoderated subreddit and in all the Joker/film subreddits. Imagine spending multiple days of your life doing that. Most people who didn't like it are already over it and stopped talking about it, and Gaga is hopefully too.

ARTPOPSYCHOLOGY 6,237
8 hours ago, mamo said: Flop after flop after flop! When I think about it, I really don't understand why Gaga decided to take on this role at all. The character of Lee was so poorly written and two dimensional even though her performance was great. I truly hope she picks better roles/scripts/directors in the future because she truly does not deserve to be associated with this mess at all! Literally the only good thing to come out of this for her was Harlequin. As a fan it truly sucks to see Gaga's potential being wasted when we ALL know what she's capable of. It's time for her to star in her own film where she's the sole lead and also a script that preferably doesn't involve another man. Also the marketing for this film was absolutely abysmal. They should NOT have premiered at Venice so early on because the negative reviews and reactions really hurt its overall box office performance. Word of mouth is REAL especially for a film like this. Had it just been released worldwide on October 4th, I'm pretty sure the box-office would have performed a lot better. Warner Bros and Todd Phillips truly fumbled the bag and messed with this film's potential completely. And don't get me started on Todd Phillips...talk about being your own worst enemy. What a dumb post. If anything, the Venice & UK premieres had way more positive reception & hype than when it was released. If anything, it was smarter for the film to roll out to average reviews, the standing ovation, all of her media appearances, the album, Etc. the minute the basement dwelling straights saw it, it was always destined to fail. The RT score before it came out was around what the first joker was. Then it became hip and engagement pieces to **** on the movie creating the **** storm that happened. Also, Gaga signed on before the script was finished because it was her most major role in a very well known IP. She obviously didn’t know the hate it would get but 90% of the reviews commend her performance and I still think she’ll be in award conversations next year. 3 1
