I’d say your second point is exactly what people expected. At least some part of it. The first film was jokers origin story and if you look at the ending, Arthur very explicitly says that he was planning on killing himself, but his rage at Murray and society made him a murderer. Given the characters history, it would’ve been just as logical for Arthur to completely descend into madness and become the crazy killer joker people know and love (even if its obviously wrong to idolize him). Not all stories, especially super hero stories, need some moral high horse script; in fact I’d say people would not normally expect it. Now, I personally think the direction they attempted to take the film in with Arthur being humanized and deconstructing the Joker Persona was much more profund; just really REALLY badly executed.

The second main thing is the deceptive marketing. This seemed like a Bonnie & Clide type dynamic with Gaga’s character. More reason to believe that we were gonna get a two-fold murderer story.

90% of the audience expected scenario A. We got scenario B; and scenario B could’ve worked had it been done better. Not only the story did not give people the obvious safe option, but the option they went with just doesn’t land well either. AND on top of this, you miss-use Gaga? That pretty much will displease every single possible demographic the movie targeted from die hard DC fans, general public and Little Monsters.

I truly think someone with a decent PR and Filmmaking background could’ve seen how this movie was a disaster, had Tod Philips allowed feedback

Know what? That's fair :icant:

I personally think it's hard to blame the film or the director for the audience's expectations based on the first film but the marketing campaign is a genuine criticism that I honestly agree with, even if I do love the movie.

The ending just wasn't up to par. It was like everyone loses.

Really? I kind of love it :icant:

Spoilers obviously but at this point, if you're in a Joker thread without seeing the film then you're just asking for it :laughga:

I actually live for subversive narratives where things take a hard left turn out of nowhere and endings are bleak and dark. When that dude shanked Arthur my jaw literally dropped. It left me with some many satisfying questions that I don't necessarily need answers to.

Was Lee his visitor? Or his old lawyer? Is Lee gonna take up the mantle of "Joker" or will she hear about this dude that killed Arthur and basically crown him the "real" Joker? Lee obviously still believes in the "absurd anarchist" movement which is hundreds of people strong, if not thousands, and want to burn Gotham to the ground 'cause they're so disillusioned with society. What are those people doing?

So much food for a sequel that should absolutely never be made :icant:

I read somewhere that people were theorizing two things; that the guards at Arkham were setting him up. And if not then likely Gary was his only visitor after the trial madness.

Not poor Mr. Puddles :bradley:

That's fun to speculate on 'cause it has a lot of implications regardless of who it was (or if the guards led him into an ambush).

Well, you are right. Sadly joker is not entertaining, is a bore, even for Gaga fans. Directors fault

Why you talking like your opinion is a fact? :dom:

As a Gaga fan I enjoyed it a lot, also my friends (non-Gaga fans) liked it. Sounds like you and many other here have been brainwashed to hate the movie. That's just sad. And it hurts LG7 too, at least the lead single... :madge:

Mind you, the film that topped it this week is a gore fest with extremely graphic torture and death scenes. We don’t see flops like this very often y’all. It’s kinda giving. :anveeroy:

Mr S

This is so bad. I don't understand the marketing. Why did they keep the musical aspect a secret. Straights/comic fans went into it and walked out when they found out, which lead to poor word of mouth and going viral for how bad it is. It's such horrible marketing.
